Page 7 of 9 On-line Study Tip Refresher? http://www.studygs.net/ School of Social Work Lexicon Academic Adviser for BASW Students Blog – BASW Catalyst BASW SENIOR YEAR: Field (Practicum) Field Faculty/Practicum Coordinator Field Liaisons Field Learning Contract STAR Database (System to Administer Records) Faculty Research Student Services offers academic advising to assist students in completing requirements for program progression, University graduation, some registration issues and program deadlines. You can set up an appointment for advising by calling 543-8617 or stopping by Room 23 (across from the computer lab). Or email sswstdnt@uw.edu to set up an appointment with Linda. Linda Ruffer, Academic Adviser, Student Services Updated to provide current info on a wide variety of topics, such as courses in other departments, SSW events, deadlines, conferences, resources on campus and international travel. http://depts.washington.edu/baswnews/ Catalyst is a set of web-based communication tools that the SSW administration and faculty use for online surveys of students for event scheduling, as well as discussion boards, assignment submission, grade posts, file sharing, learning plan submission and online quizzes. You’ll be receiving links for a number of these. In a selected community agency, the student is provided the opportunity to apply social work knowledge under the supervision of an experienced social worker. BASW students begin their practicum in their senior year. Practicum is 16 hours per week for 10 weeks each quarter. Students complete three quarters (480 hours) at the same agency. The Practicum Coordinator will do an individualized review for each student including a student-completed questionnaire which pertains to student areas of interest as well as previous experience in social work. The Field Education Committee then selects a placement for each student which meets curriculum and accreditation requirements. Field Faculty advise and approve students for practicum placements. To strengthen coordination between SSW and agencies, and to more closely monitor student progress in the Field (Practicum), each practicum agency is assigned a Field Faculty member as liaison. Liaison support is most often provided to the agency by the same person year after year, which builds strong professional relationships between agencies and SSW. The Field Liaison visits the agency at least once during the practicum; answers questions from the Field Instructor and student about the School’s program and policies; reviews and approves the educational contract and quarterly evaluation; and determines a grade. In some cases, the Field Faculty member and Field Liaison may be different people. If a student or Field Instructor has concerns about a placement, the Field Liaison is consulted. The purpose of the field (practicum) learning contract is to articulate a learning plan to be followed by both the Field Instructor(s) and BASW senior. The contract includes ten competencies developed by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and related practice behaviors, which are outcome indicators for each competency. The contract also provides the basis for evaluating the student’s professional and skill development at the end of the each quarter. The SSW database, STAR, houses active student information such as Practicum Plans, Learning Contracts, and Evaluations as well as current Practicum Placement Descriptions contributed by agencies seeking students. http://socialwork.uw.edu/programs/field-education/star-system-help-and-information Use your UW Net ID to access your practicum information.
