•XML technologies define an extensible messaging
framework
•Provides a message construct that can be exchanged over a
variety of underlying protocols.
• Designed to be independent of any particular
programming language, platform, and other technical
criteria

•XML Schema Definition (XSD) provides a sample XML data
structure
•XML files must conform to the XSD in order to be
considered valid
•The XML file is different from flat files that many employers
send CalPERS today
•Information is organized in a hierarchical structure much
like a standard outline

Three defined file formats for reporting data to
my|CalPERS via an electronic file:

– Retirement Enrollment for Public Agencies and
Schools, or Retirement Enrollment for State
