Tlw create an economic scenario that is either a traditional, command, or market economy Procedure The students will be presented this lesson through a brief power point presentation, class discussion, and through a group activity. During this lesson the students will be Quad c and introduced to the three main economic systems our world has today, traditional, D command, and market economy. Next, the students will take a closer look at the pertaining traditional economy. The students will discuss and analyze the characteristics, to advantages, and disadvantages of this system. I will use the eastern woodland Indian developing tribes of the past to display how this system works. The students will understand economic that members of a traditional economy have set roles in society and that tradition scenario sets the economic tone for this type of economy. Finally, the students will be broken into differentiated groups. Each group will be assigned one of the three economic systems we discussed in class. Each group will have to create an economic scenario displaying characteristics of the system they have been assigned. Finally, the students will share their scenario with the class and the students will try to identify which system is being displayed. TLW view and analyze North Korea, a documentary focusing on the shrouded communist nation b. TLW analyze and understand the impact of command economics in North Korea c. TLW compose a movie analysis, pointing out the characterizes of command economics displayed in the film The students will view the documentary, North Korea in class today. The students will be informed before viewing that they will have to compose a two page film analysis on the movie. The students will be informed that they must express their views on life in North Korea, things that surprised them in the film, the director’s agenda during filming, and finally point out characteristics of command economics in the film. The assignment will be worth 20 points. The students will be directed to take notes during the film to use while composing their paper. The film will take the duration of the block. I will stop the DVD to give the students ideas and information while watching the DVD. Film Analysis Standards 6.1.12 a,b,c,d Procedure Film analysis falls under quad c and d Objective Thu rsd ay Wednesday This lesson will be presented to the students through power point presentation, student led discussion, and cooperative learning. The students will view a brief power point presentation on the make up and characteristics of command economies. The students will discuss and analyze the works of Karl Marx and his influence on socialism and communism. Next, the students will be broken into differentiated groups. Each group will be given a piece of poster board. Each group will be directed to create a pro/con list on command economies. The students will create the benefits of command economics and the disadvantages of using a command economy. Each group will be given 15 minutes to create their pro/cons diagram. Next, each group will discuss their findings and share their posters with the class. From there, I will outline the actual advantages and disadvantages of command economics. a. TLW compare and contrast the political and economic systems of North and South Korea Procedure Analyzing economic systems of South and North Korea falls under quad d and c Also comparing and contrasting using own ideas and thoughts along with class content Homework This lesson will be displayed and brought to the students through film analysis and large group discussion. The students will watch a 26 minute film on South Korea’s rise to economic and political prominence. This film will serve as both a compare and contrast model and as an introduction to mixed economies. The students have previously view a documentary on life in North Korea. Now the students will discuss in a large group setting the vast differences between the cultures, political, and economic systems of each nation. Finally, the students will be asked to complete a short writing prompt comparing and contrasting the economies, political structure, and cultures of both North and South Korea. I will post the following question on my wiki page discussion board for the students to complete, “After viewing films on North and South Korea, what are the glaring differences in political, economic, and cultural structure of both nations? Please state why command economies can never succeed in competing against a mixed economy.” The students will be given the last half hour of class to complete this prompt. TLW explain and connect their writing prompt answers to our large group discussion on Freakonomics c. TLW identify and understand the characteristics of a market economy Procedure Homework As a large group we will discuss the content of chapter 3 in Freakonomics. I will facilitate this discussion by posing a series of teacher created questions that ask some of the overlapping big ideas of chapter three. All questions are very open ended and will ask the students to use higher order thinking to create a discussion within this class period. The students will use the content of their writing prompts to add to the discussion. Next, the students will view a brief power point presentation on the make up and characteristics of a market economy. The students will examine, discuss, and analyze the role of individuals, gov’t, and society within this system. I will use many examples of our economic system during this lesson.
