As a group you will find an assortment of articles for your assigned topic from a variety of e-print media (one article for each
group member and one newspaper/e-print agency – no two agencies should be repeated) .
As a group:
1. Print out the articles (minimize paper by pasting to a word document, ½ inch margins, 10 point font)
2. Read them together
3. Highlight key passages throughout the each article
4. Determine the SOAPStone (see workbook) of each article
5. Determine the Claim/Evidence/Warrant (PEE) (see workbook) for 3 key claims, of each article
6. Consider the use of Logos, Pathos, and Ethos (see workbook) of each article
Presentation:
As a group you should give a brief introduction to topic and mention the news source each person will present (1 PowerPoint or
Prezi slide).
Individually you will create a PowerPoint or Prezi presentation for your article. Each individual will prepare 5 slides:
 The first will be a breakdown of the SOAPStone,
 Three will be about three seperate quoted passages (each a complete point/claim) so you can analyze the language
(diction, syntax, tone, mood) and the quality of evidence and explanation/ warrant used to support the point/claim.
 The final slide will address the overall balance of the article in terms of Logos, Pathos, and Ethos.
Then all individuals will put their five slides into one group PowerPoint or Prezi, which means you will want to set out the
design, font and color of your PowerPoint or Prezi so that each person has identical slides.
ISM 9th Grade Media Unit: Presentation
You will be graded individually for the quality of presentation using the ISM English Oral Rubric for English 1 & 2 (see
handout).
