Abnormal and Social Psychology Syllabus – Second Semester Mr. Johnson 926-3206, kjohnson@sjschools.org In the third quarter we will explore Abnormal Psychology with an emphasis on the characteristics of specific psychological disorders. There is a group project/presentation that examines one individual with a personality disorder. There is a section that examines treatments of disorders. Unit 5: Psychological Disorders – Third Quarter - - What is an abnormal psychological disorder? How is the DSM-5, the American Psychiatric Association manual organized? Identify the characteristics of disorders within the DSM-5 we will cover, which include the following disorders: Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive and related (includes body Dysmorphic), Trauma-and Stressor-Related Disorders (includes PTSD), Somatic Symptom, Dissociative, Personality, Bipolar and Related (Mood), Depressive (Mood), Schizophrenia Spectrum and other Psychotic Develop an awareness of the prevalence of the studied disorders and which disorders coexist with each studied disorder, and the term comorbid, used to describe common associated disorders. What treatments are available for disorders and which ones are more effective with specific disorders? In the fourth quarter we will finish the final section of Unit 5 exploring the treatments available for psychological disorders and the rest of the quarter will be devoted to exploring Social Psychology with an emphasis on groups, business and sports applications and a job related project. Group Behavior: Conformity, Situational Power, Bystander Effect, and Mob Mentality. Groups: Cults, Gangs, Etc. Persuasion Techniques/Advertising Applications: Market a product, Market Ideas Sports Psychology: Application, Presentation Business and Psychology: Application, Presentation, Job Research Project Be ready (On time, cleared deck (physical and mental), handouts and something to write with) Be respectful (be aware of physical and emotional boundaries and don’t cross them) Participate and have fun (take some risks and join in discussions) Don’t cheat or plagiarize Absences -2 days for test and quiz makeups, 50% reduction for unexcused absences, cap/handbook Grading: 93-100% = A 90-92% = A83-86% = B 80-82% = B77-79% = C+ 73-76% = C 70-72% = C67-69% = D+ 63-66% = D 60-62% = D59% and below= F **I will round .5% up to the next whole number** Approximate Distribution: Quizzes – 60 points Tests = 50 points Various Work & Participation= 125 points Extra Credit: as needed
