Information about placements
Director of Public Prosecutions
The Office of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) is an independent prosecuting service
established by the Parliament of Australia to prosecute alleged offences against Commonwealth law, and to deprive
offenders of the proceeds and benefits of criminal activity. Students at this placement generally attend court, assist
with case preparation and conduct research.
QPILCH (Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House)
QPILCH is a not-for-profit community based legal organisation that coordinates the provision of pro bono legal
services for individuals and community groups. QPILCH refers civil law cases that meet its guidelines to firms and
barristers for free legal assistance. Students at this placement generally write case assessments that are used to
determine whether applicants should be referred for free legal assistance and draft letters to applicants advising of
the outcome.
Office of the Adult Guardian
The Adult Guardian is an independent statutory officer appointed to protect the rights and interests of adults who
are not able to make decisions for themselves. These adults have impaired decision making capacity caused by
intellectual or psychiatric disability, dementia, acquired brain injury or temporary impairment such as delirium or
unconsciousness.
Magistrates Court (Queensland)
The Magistrates Court is the first level of the Queensland Courts system and most criminal and civil cases are first
in this court. Students at this placement generally attend in court sitting at the Associate’s bench and complete
other tasks as requested by the Magistrate.
Land Court
The Land Court is a specialised judicial tribunal established under the Land Court Act 2000. It is constituted under
the Act to hear and determine matters relating to valuation and natural resource issues. Students at this placement
generally undertake research, attend court hearings and alternative dispute resolution sessions and draft various
legal documents.
Crime and Misconduct Commission
The CMC investigates police and public sector misconduct, as well as organised and major crime. It offers a range
of services including research, advice, intelligence and surveillance. Students at this placement are generally a
major research project by the CMC.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service
The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (Qld South) Ltd is a non-profit, community based Indigenous
organisation responsible to the community for the provision of legal representation in areas of criminal, civil and
family law. Students at this placement generally attend court, assist in providing defences to clients, undertake
research and draft various legal documents and letters.
Department of Environment and Resource Management
The Department of Environment and Resource Management handles some of the most complex issues facing
Queensland, including securing water for the future, managing land use, meeting the challenges of climate change,
and conserving the state’s natural and cultural heritage. Legal services provides legal advice and support in relation
to these functions. It manages all common law litigation on behalf of the Department and provides legal advice on
matters including: agreements with the Commonwealth government, local authorities and public intuitions,
administrative law, contracts, insurance, native title and legislative review.
Office of the Information Commissioner
The Office of the Information Commissioner is Queensland’s independent body established to promote access to
government-held information; and protect people’s personal information held by government. Students at this
placement generally undertake research, meet with Review Officers and assist with preparation of various legal
documents.
QCOMP
Q-COMP oversees the Queensland workers' compensation scheme. Students at this placement generally attend
court and tribunal hearings, assist with preparation of various legal documents and undertake research.
Department of Transport and Main Roads
TMR manages Queensland's integrated transport environment. TMR offers a number of placement opportunities
and students may be involved in commercial contracting, general advice or dispute resolution.
Federal Magistrates Court
The Federal Magistrates Court is the first level of the Federal Court system and its jurisdiction includes family law
and child support, administrative law, admiralty law, bankruptcy, copyright, industrial law and human rights.
