Our connection with Goodwill exists in their supported employment program. This program places unemployed individuals into jobs that fit into their specific skill set and gives them the opportunity to become employees at a variety of different stores and facilities.

Goodwill’s Supported Employment Services are all about assisting you in getting a job that is personalized to your interests, strengths and needs. Supported Employment Services provide long-term job coaching support and can assist whenever you have new tasks to learn. Working closely with our dedicated team of coaches, you'll develop natural supports in the community and receive assistance if needed to address other issues that could affect your work or personal life.

METHODS AND TECHNIQUES USED

Acquired data from Goodwill Industries.

Cleaned data: verified zip code entries, street addresses (employment locations)

Separated 7 counties within the southeastern Wisconsin division of Goodwill’s supported employment program.

Deciphered DVR regions into different counties.

Reviewed different mapping techniques, and determined:

Standard point and graduated point maps were the most appropriate for the cleaned data.

Trial with other maps (kernel density, point density, hot spot within wage)

Analyzed maps by geocoding employment locations

Our area of analysis covered all of Southeastern Wisconsin which includes the counties of: Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine,

Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha.

The data for our analysis was made up of 350 different locations that the Supported Employment program is a part of.

Here is an overview of the area we analyzed.

Research Question: Where are the employment locations of the individuals placed as part of Goodwill’s Supported Employment

Program?

Results

Washington County: 39 Employment Locations

Waukesha County: 48 Employment Locations

Walworth County: 5 Employment Locations

Ozaukee County: 18 Employment Locations

Racine County: 7 Employment Locations

Milwaukee County: 225 Employment Locations

Kenosha County: 8 Employment Locations

Total: 350 Employment Locations

Research Question: Among the Supported Employment Locations where were

Permanent Job Placements vs Temporary Work Experience opportunities located throughout Southeastern Wisconsin?

Results

Kenosha County:

4 Permanent Job Placements

4 Temporary Work Experience

Milwaukee County:

79 Permanent Job Placements

146 Temporary Work Experience

Ozaukee County:

8 Permanent Job Placement

10 Temporary Work Experience

Racine County:

5 Permanent Job Placement

2 Temporary Work Experience

Walworth County:

3 Permanent Job Placement

2 Temporary Work Experience

Washington County:

24 Temporary Work Experience

Waukesha County:

Research Question: When analyzing Milwaukee and Waukesha

County, considering wage differences related to job industry, on average which county are individuals earning the highest hourly wages?

The reason we wanted to focus on these two counties is because they hold 78% of the total Supported Employment Locations.

We used our data on wage and job industry in these counties to geocode them. The maps indicate a graduated point system; the larger the point the higher the wage within that job industry.

INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

Waukesha county’s manufacturing industry held the highest paid positions

Within Waukesha county, we observed three individuals located at two separate businesses earning an average of $10.83/hour (compared to $7.68/hour for all other placement job industries.)

For placement individuals motivated by monetary gains, we recommend that the

Good Will Supported Employment seeks out more of these positions in Waukesha county.

After some simple investigation, there was found to be 14 other manufacturing position openings in Waukesha county, most of which have a wage similar or above the $10.83 mark.

Largest company in this category being Quad Graphics.

Aerotek industries offers entry level positions with opportunity for advance within the manufacturing positions.

Milwaukee county’s manufacturing wage average for placement individuals was also the highest job skill category with an average of $8.78/hour

It appears that manufacturing jobs have a tendency to be permanent job placements instead of a temporary work experience indicating a final step to the overall process.
