Principal’s Message
I want to thank our school and
community for a fantastic Veteran’s
Day recognition ceremony held at
our school on November 11, 2014.
It was an honor to have special
guests who have given service to our
great country present to hear
celebrations, stories, and songs. In
addition to our special veterans who
attended, a list of veterans not in
November 24, 2014
attendance was read to honor and
memorialize. Our special veteran
guests included Thomas Brannon,
Robert Ghee, Larry Gregory, David
Lokey, Brad Lyons, Roger Minyard,
and Jim Russell. We also appreciate
guest speaker Debbie Richey for her
heartfelt tribute to the servicemen of
our country, AND riding her Harley
Davidson into the gym in honor of
them.
A HUGE thanks to FR
Coordinator Leslie Carr and our
student leaders who organized and
lead the ceremony, and our cafeteria
leaders for making a special
breakfast. This is undoubtedly one
of the best events I have ever seen at
Oakland Elementary!
It was also great to see our
families gather for our Thanksgiving
luncheon this past Wednesday.
These lunches are such a great time
for our community and school to
shine! I am especially proud of our
cafeteria leaders for the wonderful
meal that was prepared.
In the spirit of thanks, I know
everyone is eagerly anticipating the
Thanksgiving break coming up next
Wednesday. Happy Thanksgiving
to ALL of the Oakland Family! If
you are traveling, please be safe as
you go about. I am thankful for
each and every one of our kiddos,
families, and staff!
Help Needed for OES Student
Relay for Life Team
Dear Families,
The Relay for Life Team needs some
particular items donated. We are
working on making ornaments for the
Mingle and Jingle event later in
November. We would appreciate ANY
donations that anyone would like to
give. Please share this with your
friends, businesses, and acquaintances.
You may know someone that is crafty
and would be willing to donate items as
well. The following is a list that would
be very helpful if we could acquire. We
would of course take any other craft
oriented items that you may have that
are not on the list. Here is what we are
needing:
 Beads of any sort
 Puffy paint/glitter or regular
and/or craft paints any colors
 Branches or sticks fallen from trees
in your yard
 Hot glue sticks
 old jeans (they can have holes in
them or can be shorts)
 Twine
 jars any size with lids preferably
 Felt (any colors or sizes)
 Ribbon (any style, colors or widths)
 Old ornaments (especially any that
are ball like shaped)
 Any scrap material (we need all
sizes including very small sizes as
well)
 Athletic crew socks that are white
(can have holes in the toes, etc.)
 buttons (all sizes colors and
shapes)
 If you can not donate items, you
can always donate a small amount
of money to our team so we can
buy some items needed.
We really want to continue to do this
with students because we see this as
valuable learning experience for
them. Hopefully students will learn the
value of hard work and to help others in
need. We would appreciate any help or
donations. We thank everyone in
advance.

OES Principal and FRYSC
Coordinator Visit OBC Senior
Group
Principal Mike Johnson and FR
Coordinator Leslie Carr had the
awesome privilege to speak to the
Oakland Baptist Church Seniors
group Friday, November 21. In
conjunction with our Volunteer
Program, Oakland would like to see
these senior adults become active
participants in the Oakland
Elementary family, such as foster
grandparents, Reading with the
Retired, or simply to have lunch with
a special student.
During this meeting Mrs. Carr
and Mr. Johnson spoke of the value
of relationships with grandparents,
how they could serve the needs of
our school through volunteering, and
the reward one finds when spending
time with children.
Oakland Elementary realizes
the importance of mature role models
and their impact in building positive
relationships with needing and
deserving children. Thank you so
much Mrs. Gracie Hunt for arranging
this special meeting, and a wonderful
lunch.
We would like to challenge this
group to spread the word of our
volunteer program out in their
community to help us bring every
available senior adult we can to
spend time with our children. Please
contact Leslie Carr at 270-563-9886,
or by email at
lesliecarr2@warren.kyschools.us .
