Curriculum Objectives to be
covered in each subject area.
There will be a focus on
presentation and taking pride
in our work in all subjects.
Music – We will be taking part
in the Sing Up project and
practising a range of songs in
prepartion for a concert at
Bedford Corn Exchange in the
summer term.
RE – We will be thinking about
the natural world and
comparing the creation stories
from the Muslim, Jewish and
Christian faiths. We will
consider the work of charities
around the world and how we
can make small changes to
preserve our environment.

about healthy lifestyles and
participating in activities linked
to our transition to Middle
School.
DT – We will be creating non
fiction pop up books to share
our learning about
earthquakes and volcanoes.
These will contain box folds
and sliding mechanisms.
Application of Number
Processing weather data,
comparing temperatures,
interpreting numerical
information and reading the
time.
Communication Skills
Paired discussions, speaking
and listening and asking and
answering questions. We will
also develop our presenting
skills by delivering weather
forecasts.
Movers and Shakers
Term: Spring 1
Year 4
Intended Outcomes.
By the end of this topic, children will have:
Developed their understanding of how and
where earthquakes and volcanoes are formed.
Related Homework Activities
Children will receive homework in their
learning logs every Friday which will be due in
on the following Wednesday.
Humanities – We will be learning about how
volcanoes and earthquakes are formed. We
will particularly concentrate on the Pacific Ring
of Fire and we will compare and contrast the
weather in this region with the weather in the
UK. The impact of earthquakes and volcanoes
on human beings and the physical landscape
will be analysed and we will think about how
damage can be limited.
Maths blocks to be covered in discrete
teaching.
We will be learning about money and
calculating change in pounds and pence. This
learning will then be applied to enable us to
solve a range of one and two step word
problems. We will also be analysing data and
thinking about effective ways to display
numerical information. Learning about coordinates in two and four quadrants of a grid
will help us to position and locate objects.
Throughout our Maths learning we will
continue to solve calculations using the four
number operations. There will also be a
continued focus on learning times tables to
enable rapid recall.
Application of ICT
Word processing, use of
Microsoft Excel to process raw
data, making power point
presentations and using the
internet to research
information. We will also use
ICT to support our learning
PE –Tuesday and Thursday
We will continue to develop our
acrobatic gymnastic skills and we will
develop and refine routines
individually and in small groups. We
will also learn cheerleading routines
and think about moving in time to
music.
Literacy (based on the Big Write and
using elements of vocabulary,
connectives, openers and
punctuation).
Fiction (Traditional Tales): We will be
looking at the features of
mythological tales and how we can
create our own imaginative stories.
During this unit we will look at the
correct use of punctuation,
particularly focussing on the use of
apostrophes to denote possession
and the use of inverted commas in
direct speech.
Science – We will be developing our
knowledge of the human body,
focusing in particular on the digestive
system. We will compare our teeth to
the teeth of animals, both herbivores
and carnivores, and think about how
a healthy diet can support our
growth. We will create food chains
showing how animals prey on other
creatures in their surroundings and
we will think about the impact of
deforestation on the habitats of wild
animals.
Computing– We will be inputting
weather data into Microsoft Excel,
creating graphs, analysing results and
presenting our own weather
forecasts.
Working with Others
Taking turns and sharing ideas,
collaborative projects, class
discussions, guided group work and
talk partners
Improving own learning
Success steps, developing children’s
assessment of their own learning,
discussion time to reflect on learning,
targets
Problem Solving
Using atlases, comparing and
contrasting, maths and science
investigations and solving maths
problems in practical contexts.
