Ashly Newman Persuasive Speech Outline Due July 5th, 2011 Topic: Outsourcing is good for the economy Specific Purpose: To persuade my class that outsourcing jobs benefits the economy. Thesis Statement: Outsourcing jobs overseas raises wages in the U.S. and helps businesses stay profitable. The number of jobs created outnumbers the jobs displaced in other countries. We must stay competitive globally for our economy to improve. Introduction I. Outsourcing benefits the economy as a whole. a. Do not be fooled by the idea of displacing jobs from the U.S. 1. This could impact your current employer one day, if it hasn’t already. 2. Keeping all jobs within the U.S. under the higher demand of wages could put your employer out of business. b. Increased wages and jobs in the U.S. are from businesses becoming more profitable. 1. Helps keep inflation down. 2. Prices stay low because the competition is so robust. II. My company, ADP National Services, began more outsourcing in the past two years. a. No one was laid off within ADP, more employees were simply hired in India for lower wages. 1. We needed a way to maximize productivity. 2. With lower wages and 24/7 productivity, we succeeded in surviving the worst of the economy downfall. b. We received our yearly raise after being deprived for two years. Body I. How can the number of gained jobs outnumber the amount of displaced jobs from the U.S.? a. In the article The Comprehensive Impact of Offshore IT Software and Services Outsourcing on the U.S. Economy and I.T Industry it states, “Benefits compound over time making the U.S. economy more efficient.” 1. Level of U.S. output is increased, creating twice as many jobs that were displaced. 2. Average wages are increased in the U.S. b. Increased economic activity creates a wide range of new jobs. 1. Raises received within my employer allowed us to complete major house projects. 2. This increased activity puts money into the economy II. Jeff Lande from an outsourcing I.T company, Information Technology Association of America, says competing globally is important and will improve our nation’s economy. a. Competition keeps prices low and keeps things affordable. b. If you don’t, your competition will. This is a growing trend throughout the U.S. III. There are some cons with outsourcing, but it doesn’t change the fact that we need each other. a. Cons might include lower quality of products and communication issues. 1. If managed right, these can be avoided. 2. Some move their families overseas to closely monitor outsourced locations. b. Your job being outsourced is a major con 1. If you are employable, you will find another job. 2. Even though outsourcing benefits the economy as a whole, you could be one of these unlucky ones to have your job displaced. c. Globally we can improve our economic status working together. 1. Let’s face it, we need each other. 2. The author of article Outsourcing is Good for Our Economy, Ralph E. Patsfall, says insourcing foreign companies such as Toyota, BMW and Honda has also helped improve our economy. Conclusion I. I encourage all of you to support outsourcing. a.
