Day One Induction
Welcome to the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences,
The University of Queensland.
Our School aims to provide you with a safe environment in which to conduct your work. As part of
our commitment to occupational health and safety (OHS), your induction process will include
training in the University and School OHS policies and procedures.
This is achieved by providing online training modules and local SAFS OHS induction sessions. The
induction sessions present an opportunity to discuss the nature of your work and introduce the UQ
safety management system, databases and specific school work procedures. The following steps
should be followed before you commence unsupervised work:
1. Complete the compulsory online OH&S training modules, “General Workplace Safety
Training” and “Annual Fire Safety Training” at
http://www.uq.edu.au/ohs/?page=153556
Each online training module requires the completion of a short multiple choice test. If you do
not achieve an 80% pass mark, the program simply provides you with a new assessment test.
The School can provide you with a computer work station - please ask your supervisor or the
Operations staff.
2. Information about online training access:
All training modules are located on the Learn.UQ Blackboard Learning Management System,
and you will need either a UQ Username and password or a student user login and password
to log in. After logging in, click on “UQ Workplace Inductions and OH&S Training” in the
section titled “Training Courses”. You may access this training module externally (outside UQ
computer network) if you wish.
3. If you are a staff member (including casual), RHD student or Summer Research Scholar, you
will be issued with a UQ Username. Please contact your supervisor or UQConnect if you have
not yet received your Username.
If you are a Coursework Masters, Honours or undergraduate student, you will be issued
with a student login and password.
If you are a volunteer or short term visiting researcher and you do not have nor do you
expect to receive a UQ username and password, the following link will provide access to hard
copies of the induction training modules and assessments.

internal phone). In the event that you have to evacuate the building, follow the green exit
signs and make your way to the Evacuation Assembly Point. Each wing / floor of every
building displays an evacuation diagram.
How do I know when to evacuate the building?
A Beep, Beep sound will indicate that you must prepare to evacuate. If this is followed by a Whoop,
Whoop sound, you must leave the building immediately.
Who is in charge during an evacuation?
Each floor has a warden, who will be wearing a hard hat. You are to follow this person’s
directions.
5. Ask operations staff to register you for attendance at the School OHS Induction. These
induction sessions are held each Tuesday at 9am. St Lucia- in the Hartley Teakle Building,
room S324. At Gatton in building 8117A – 103, and will run for 1 ½ hours.
6. Three documents, UQ New Worker OHS Induction Checklist, Training Needs Analysis New
Workers and Training Needs Analysis Laboratory Workers will be provided to you during
your induction session. These documents present a basis of discussion between you and
your academic and laboratory supervisors regarding any further training you may require.
Examples of this training may be regulatory requirements such as biosafety training or you
may need competency training in the safe use of laboratory instruments and machinery. On
completion, these forms should signed by you and your supervisor and returned to your
local Work Health Safety Coordinator.
We wish you well in your endeavours and remind you that safety
