MOCAN Schools-Child Care Work Group October 24, 2013 Attendees: Robin Gammon, Lynn Cole, Denise L, Deborah Markenson, Sara Gable, Barbara Keene, Denise Redmon, Ellen Wheeler, Amy Stringer-Hessel, Deidre Griffith Resources Work group members need to review resource document and submit feedback by November 18. The list will be sent out electronically. Infographic Robin contacted Pat for MO specific information for obesity rates. Overweight statistics will be added to the rates. Add bar graph to depict jump in obesity rates between young children and school age. Consequences- Society- change current information to health care savings costs. Individual consequences- add academic achievement. Sarah Gable will add some language to that category. Solutions- Graphically depict some of the bullet points. Early Childhood- improve and enforce child care licensing rules to meet current physical activity recommendations. Change early childhood reference to child care. For Child care add mention of importance of CACFP and how Missouri is leveraging federal funds to benefit health of Missouri children. This information can be added to the collaboration statement at the end of the document. Send any other comments to Deborah, Robin or Cindy by next week. Child Care Physical Activity Standards Crosswalk: Megan from Child Care Aware Nemours project completed a cross walk of physical activity standards from different states. Sarah shared some other physical activity standards from other sources. Sarah will integrate the newer standards into the cross walk. This cross walk can be used to help identify potential licensing rule changes. MFH/Eat Smart project Barbara reported that DHSS is submitting and application to MFH to work with selected child care centers on Move Smart Guidelines. Plan- work with child care providers within districts in Healthy schools Healthy communities. Provide TA to enable providers to qualify for Eat Smart Move Smart recognition. One barrier is that many of the MFH communities are in rural areas. In some communities there are no child care centers. The timeline is to begin in December. Funds will be available for child care centers to purchase equipment and make changes to their scenter that would enable them to meet the Guidelines. 13 school districts- the point is to improve the health of the community. The Eat Smart is a hook to get the community involved. Move Smart A committee has developed physical activity guidelines for child care. The guidelines are being tweaked and a work book is being created to assist centers in meeting guidelines. There are 3 core standards that are already required by licensing- equipment, withholding play time, physical activity time. There are 9 intermediate guidelines that are not required but centers can achieve to receive recognition. The guidebook should be completed soon. The guidelines will be piloted with some centers to determine if they are clear, realistic and achievable. An application for centers to apply for recognition will be developed next.
