July 19, 2015
16th Sunday in
Ordinary Time - B
In week 6 of my
summer sacred study
series on the 4
Eucharistic
Prayers
for Various Needs
[EPFVN], which is one
EP with 4 themes, we
reflect on the first
part of what most
people
call
the
‘Consecration.’ All four versions of this EP are
identical from the end of the ‘Holy, Holy’ [Sanctus]
through Christ’s ‘Words of Institution’ and the
Anamnesis. [In case you forgot: the opposite of
the Greek word ‘anamnesis’ is ‘amnesia,’ which
means ‘to forget;’ so an ‘anamnesis’ helps us to
remember; I’ll help you remember this in a few
weeks, just in case you forget it again!]
The second half of each EPFVN, between the
‘Mystery of Faith’ acclamation and ‘Amen,’ is
also the same - but each EPFVN has its own
unique petitions which match the theme of its
particular Preface; they are added right before
the remembrance of the dead. We will review
these ‘thematic’ intentions in a few weeks. Here
is the first half of each of the 4 EPFVN:
Eucharistic Prayer For Various Needs - Pre-Consecration
The Priest, with hands extended, says:
You are indeed Holy and to be glorified, O God,
who love the human race and who
always walk with us on the journey of life.
Blessed indeed is your Son, present in our midst
when we are gathered by his love, and when,
as once for the disciples, so now for us,
he opens the Scriptures and breaks the bread.
He joins his hands and,
holding them extended over the offerings, says:
Therefore, Father most merciful,
we ask that you send forth your Holy Spirit
to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine,
He joins his hands and makes the Sign of the Cross
once over the bread and chalice together, saying:
that they may become for us
the Body and [+] Blood
He joins his hands.
of our Lord Jesus Christ.
people, who attentively listen and join in the
Sanctus, Mystery of Faith and Amen. But notice
it does not say God walks or drives FOR us - for
we decide the course and set the pace. For
while God ‘always walks with us’ - He does not
force us to go where we do not want to go. Nor
is His Son ‘one with us’ by ‘magic.’ We must not
only be ‘gathered in His Name’ - but also ‘by His
love’ - which means we must be attuned to His
Sacred Heart - attentive to His needs, especially
as He cries out to us through the poor and
needy, the vulnerable and unwanted - and we
must be of one mind and heart with Christ, for
as the Apostle Paul admonished us, we must:
“Have among [ourselves] the same attitude that
is also [ours] in Christ Jesus” [Philippians 2:5]
“He Opens the Scriptures and Breaks the Bread.”
These are two profound references to the
biblically-based Catholic belief that Christ is
present in the Bible, and above all, the Blessed
Sacrament - not just symbolically or as a
memorial but for real!
For after His
Resurrection, as He walked with two of His
disciples on the road to Emmaus, He “was made
known to them in the breaking of the bread.”
[Luke 24:35] and later told them: “’These are my
words that I spoke to you while I was still with
you, that everything written about me in the
law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms
must be fulfilled.’ Then he opened their minds
to understand the scriptures.” [Luke 24:44-45] So
we ask Christ to do for us what He did long ago.
Epiclesis: Bringing Down the Holy Spirit. As I
previously explained, the Priest is directed to
bring his hands down, over the offerings, so
that - through his consecrated hands - the Holy
Spirit can transform the bread and wine into
Christ’s Real Presence: His Most Holy Body and
Precious Blood. For what Jesus did at Holy
Thursday’s Last Supper table and on Good
Friday’s Cross was not a one-shot-deal; it is
renewed - in an unbloodied, sacramental way at every Mass, in the most holy Eucharist, until
His return in glory.
While each EP has its own flow and style, the
four EPFVNs certainly have a beautifully poetic,
scripturally-sound basis.
Next week: the
EPFVN’s unique words of institution.
In His holy Name,
”God Is My Co-Pilot.” This may be an outdated
bumper sticker, but it is good theology! As in
every EP, the Priest prays with extended hands
as he addresses God the Father on behalf of the

Brief Eucharistic Adoration at the end of Masses
July 26, August 2, August 9, August 16
The 17th, 18th, 19th & 20th Sundays in Ordinary Time - B
In the 3-year cycle of Sunday readings, Year ‘A’
highlights Matthew’s Gospel; the current Year
‘B’ is Mark and Year ‘C’ is Luke. Mark’s Gospel,
the shortest, does not cover the year, so for 5
weeks we read from Chapter 6 of John’s Gospel:
the ‘Bread of Life Discourse’ in which Jesus
declares, “I am the Bread of Life!” For 4 weeks
we will end Mass with a brief taste of an ancient
ritual: Eucharistic Adoration. [The theme of the 5th
week is less Eucharistic, so we will not have Adoration.]
Jesus often said we need to be in His Presence:
“Come to me, all who labor … and I will give you
rest.” [Matthew 11:28] “I am with you always until
the end of time.” [28:20] “Can you not watch one
hour with me?” [Mark 14:37] “Remain in me as I
remain in you.” [John 15:4] How blessed are they
who ‘make a visit’ to the Blessed Sacrament …
just to be in Christ’s Real Presence!
Each weekend’s Mass will end similarly: after
Communion has been distributed, the Blessed
Sacrament will remain on the Altar as all remain
kneeling. Then all stand for the Prayer after
Communion, [announcements are made earlier] and
then kneel again to sing a hymn of various
traditions that adores or extols Christ’s Real
Presence. After the Sacrament is reposed in the
Tabernacle, all stand for the Blessing, Dismissal
and an instrumental Recessional.
On July 26 and August 2 the Hosts will be left in
the usual ciborium for Adoration; no incense is
used; on August 9 and 16 we will ‘expose’ the
Sacrament in a monstrance, which requires at
least 4 candles and incense. On August 9 Mass
will end as above; on the 16th the Priest,
donning a humeral veil, will impart the
Eucharistic Blessing. May this taste of this
venerable rite help us better appreciate Christ’s
Real Presence in the Eucharist, and encourage
more people to frequently ‘visit’ the Tabernacle
during the week to ‘watch one hour’ [Mark 14:37]
with our Eucharistic Lord.
Note: since Christ is equally present when the
Host is ‘exposed’ in a monstrance, in a ciborium
or in the Tabernacle, a SINGLE knee
genuflection is the proper the sign of reverence;
the
‘double
knee’ genuflection
during
adoration, taught to many of us, has been
suppressed. [C.f.: Order for the Solemn Exposition of
the Holy Eucharist, #9, from the document Holy
Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside of Mass,
#84.]

This Weekend’s Readings
Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Jeremiah 23:1-6
In this passage, God denounces false leaders who
have scattered his people. He promises that they
will be reunited and led by one who is just and
wise.
Second Reading: Ephesians 2:13-18
Paul explains that through Jesus Christ, there is no
longer hostility between Gentile and Jew. Instead,
through the Spirit of Christ, both groups become
one body and are equal in the eyes of God.
Gospel: Mark 6:30-34
The apostles returned after their first mission and
told Jesus what they had done and taught. He
told them to rest, but the people kept coming to
them. So they went to find a private place, but the
people learned where they were going and
arrived first. Jesus felt sorry for them and decided
to teach them instead of resting.

Top Ten Reasons People Give
For Not Going To Church
We all try to find ways to justify our lack of Mass
attendance and believe (momentarily) that our
justification will convince ourselves and others
of their correctness. Today we continue our
look at some of the most popular excuses along
with a humorous and realistic response.
3: Mass Is Sooooooooooo Booooooooring
Some say it is not always what Mass brings to
you, but what you bring to Mass - your attitude,
your attention to the readings and prayers, the
quality time you are spending with God, etc.
But, what Mass brings to you is unbelievable,
and transcends any bad music or boring
preaching (not at SEAS, of course - we are
blessed with a gifted homilist and a music
ministry second to none!). Mass is the True
Presence of God in the Eucharist and a loving
community!
Check back next week for excuse #4!
Around the Diocese
Join the Diocese of Metuchen delegation for
this historic first visit of Pope Francis to the
United States
Seats are still available.
The Diocese of Metuchen invites you to
participate in a pilgrimage to Philadelphia for
the Mass to be celebrated there by Pope Francis
on September 27, 2015.
The Holy Father announced last November that
he will come to Philadelphia for the eighth
World Meeting of Families being held there. He
will celebrate a public Mass with a million or
more participants on Sunday, September 27 on
the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, in
full view of the crowds arrayed from the
museum down the Ben Franklin Parkway. No
tickets are required for the Mass. No general
seating will be available. The Mass is a standing
event.
The Diocese has made arrangements for bus
transportation
from
various
locations
throughout the diocese.
A number of
parishes/groups are also running bus trips to
the Papal Mass. The Papal Mass is tentatively
scheduled for 4 pm. The exact schedule is not
yet available from the event planners in
Philadelphia, but we anticipate very early
departure times. Once we have a clear picture
of the number of people who want to
participate from each site, we will assign bus
coordinators and send confirmation materials
with precise details.
Prayer and reflection
resources will also be provided to enable
pilgrims to share a common experience as the
Diocesan Church in preparation for and on the
day of this special event.
The round trip bus reservation and pilgrimage
package will be approximately $55. per person.
Each participant is responsible for their own
meal costs on that day and also any
train/shuttle expenses from the parking lot to
the event site and back. Pilgrims should be
physically fit and prepared to walk several miles.
Reservations for bus seats are limited and will be
accepted on a “first-come first-served” basis. For

Act Now to Stop Assisted Suicide in New Jersey
Vote NO on A2270
A2270, a bill allowing assisted suicide, was
released by the NJ Assembly Health and Senior
Services Committee on Thursday, June 5. This
bill would allow a person who has a terminal
disease to request a prescription from a
physician for lethal drugs that would end their
life. Terminal disease is defined in the bill as an
incurable and irreversible disease that has been
medically confirmed and will, within reasonable
medical judgment, result in a patient's death.
Please ask members of the Assembly to vote
"No" on A2270 if it is posted for a vote in the
Assembly. Our duty is to assist those who are
dying- not kill them.
