The American System*****HUGE*****
****We know that the combined 3 Acts passed by Congress from 1807-1812 and the
War of 1812- 1815... Influenced the Creation of an American Manufacturing and 1ST
Industrial Revolution* (The 2nd* begins after the Civil War)… This drastically
emerges and changes the Nation from this point forward… It’s basis was the Cotton
Textile Industry…that emerges in factories mostly in New England….but the
emergence of Steam Power applied to Transportation and Agricultural engines, as
well as the Communication Revolution, interchangeable parts and cotton gin of Eli
Whitney… all drastically affect the NATURE OF WORK… and combined with HENRY
CLAY’S AMERICAN SYSTEM… (THE MARKET REVOLUTION) … BEGINS THE UNITED
STATES CLIMB TO BECOME THE WORLDS LEADING INDUSTRIAL NATION BY 1900.
The American System – Henry Clay
-After the War Britain attempted to dump (sell a ton of cheap manufactured goods
in the USA) … if this was allowed all of the burgeoning industries created over the
previous 20 years or so could have been put out of business….

AMERICAN HISTORY created primarily for protection of our industries….
(remember a tariff is a tax on goods made outside the USA (RATE WAS 20-25%)…
this tax is collected at our ports … and has TWO significant effects: 1- IT IS THE
MAIN $$$ MAKER FOR OUR FEDERAL GOV’T UNTIL THE PASSAGE OF THE INCOME
TAX IN THE 20TH CENTURY…2
THIS TAX RAISES THE PRICES OF FOREIGN
MADE GOODS ABOVE THOSE MADE IN AMERICA, THUS GIVING AMERICAN
MANUFACTURES PROTECTION AND THE ABILITY TO MAKE A GUARANTEED
PROFIT.
