Following the acquisition of the business by a third party in 1973, he became MD of another retail business, before being appointed as MD of his original family business, again in 1975. Determined to bring the business back into family hands he led a £42m management buyout of the company in 1983. Since then, through organic growth and acquisition, he has grown the business to 1300 branches with a turnover of £200m and profits of over £14m. In 2004 he was awarded the CBE in the Birthday Honours List for Services to the Retail Sector. John has a reputation for being a paternalistic employer and, since regaining ownership of his family business in 1983, has remained true to his vision to ensure the business remains wholly family owned and not answerable to shareholders.
