 Primary Care Office for Arizona
 Develop and implement strategies for strengthening
primary care/health care delivery system
 Administer programs to increase the number of
providers/ improve services in underserved areas
 Identify areas that need improved health services/
assist with federal/state shortage designations
 Provide TA to statewide partners

Primary Care Area Profiles
• 127 Primary Care Areas (PCAs) in Arizona
• Statistical profiles are published annually
– 2009 currently available, waiting for census data to run 2010
• Include data related to designation status,
demographics, health care services and utilization, and
health status
– Includes county and state comparison data

• Statistical profiles are also posted for “places” (cities)

• “Special Area” profiles can be requested for a service
area of your choice
– Looks identical to PCA Profile but for your unique area
– Define area by blocks, block groups, census tracts, zip codes or
street boundaries
– Send request to tracy.lenartz@azdhs.gov
– Please allow 2 week turn-around time

• Can also request NFA for your specific service area

• Utilizes PCA boundaries
• Designation is based on Primary Care Index, consisting

Federal Shortage Designations
Purpose:
• Designations identify areas or populations as having a shortage of
or need for dental, mental, and primary health care
providers/services
Types of Federal Designations:
• Medically Underserved Area (MUA) and Medically Underserved
Population (MUP)
– Primary Care only
• Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA)
– Primary Care, Dental, Mental Health

• HSD can create specialized GIS maps
– Health Planning purposes
– Grant applications
• Tips for Successful Mapping:
– Define service area by zip codes, census tracts or major street
boundaries
– Be very specific about data you would like included on the map
– Send request to tracy.lenartz@azdhs.gov
– Allow plenty of time (HSD IT Specialist works on a limited
contract basis)
