Which side to choose, Loyalist or Patriot
Dear Citizens of Princess Anne County,
There are two sides to this war, to be a Loyalist or Patriot. A Loyalist is
someone who is loyal to the king of England. A Patriot is a person who
wants freedom from England. You should be a Patriot because you can
have freedom for you and everyone else. The Patriots will fight for our
freedom against the strongest army, the British army. If the Patriots win
the American Revolutionary War then we will be free from England’s
taxes.
The Sugar Act of 1764 is a good reason why I choose the Patriots. We
should be upset; we have never paid taxes before so why should we? This tax
was to help pay for debt after the French and Indian War. It also
enforced on imports of sugar and molasses from the West Indies. This was
also used to pay for the expenses of running the colonies; we should be upset
because we have never paid taxes for over 160 years. Plus, we know how to
run the colonies without paying taxes. This was also paid for new acquired
land. Other items taxed in this act were textiles, coffee, wines, and indigo.
In March 1765, the Quartering Act was passed into the colonies.
This act requires the colonist to provide food and housing for the British
troops. This act was supposed intended to help protect the colonist from
Indians. Most of the troops were stationed to coastal cities such as New
York and Boston. They were stationed there because interactions with the
Indians were greater.
In 1766, the English Parliament passed the Declaratory Act. This
was on the same day that the Stamp Act was repealed. This act stated the
British government has total power over the colonies. It also allowed them
to make any laws in the colonies.
The Townshend Acts was passed in June 1767. This act taxed the
colonist on import items such as paper, glass, paint, led, and tea. These
taxes were intended to help offset the cost for the British governing the
colonies. It also established customs commissioners in Boston.
In May 1773, the Tea Act was passed. This was supposed to be a
previous tax on tea, but exempted the British East India Company so it
could sell its tea cheaper. We should be upset because this taxed on what we
love the most, tea. It included colonial merchants who had been smuggling
tea from Holland to avoid the taxes. The company was nearly bankrupt; it
had millions of pounds of tea that was in its warehouses. It successfully
lobbied the Parliament for this act. In September, Parliament said that
the company had to ship half a million pounds of tea to tea agents.
You should not join the Loyalist because Great Britain would have
more people. If Britain had more people than the colonies then they would
win the American Revolutionary War. Plus, if Britain won they would
keep taxing the colonies/colonists. Another reason is that we need freedom
from England and its taxes. These are reasons why you shouldn’t be a
Loyalist.
These are reasons why you should join the Patriots and not
Loyalists. Another reason why you should join the Patriots is that they
would have the power to governor themselves and don’t need another country
to do it for them. This letter gives important facts why you shouldn’t join
the Loyalist’s.
Yours Truly,
Shark Student
