British Literature (English IV) Ms. Varnado (2403) ebony.varnado@killeenisd.org Conference time: 10:45 – 11:20am Term: Aug. 24, 2015 – June 2, 2016 Introduction to Subject Students enrolled in English IV continue to increase and refine their communication skills. High school students are expected to plan, draft, and complete written compositions on a regular basis. Students edit their papers for clarity, engaging language, and the correct use of the conventions and mechanics of written English and produce final, error-free drafts. In English IV, students are expected to write in a variety of forms, including business, personal, literary, and persuasive texts as well as create various forms of multimedia projects. English IV students read extensively in multiple genres from British literature and other world literature. Periods from British literature may include the old English period, medieval period, English renaissance, 17th century, 18th century, romantic period, Victorian period, and modern and postmodern period. Students learn literary forms and terms associated with selections being read. Students interpret the possible influences of the historical context on a literary work. TEXTBOOKS (Class Set): Prentice Hall Literature – The British Tradition; Texas Write Source Supplies Needed for Class: * Blue or Black Ink Pens, and Pencils * One Notebook or Folder with loose leaf paper * Kleenex, Hand Sanitizer (personal supply) * Earphones (your own) *Thumb drive (optional, but highly recommended) - storage device for work on computersthis device will be very beneficial to the student throughout this school year and for years to come. This device can also be used for other course assignments other than English class assignments. **The student will need their supplies daily to be prepared for class. Grading: Daily Grade/Participation/Class work = 40%; and Tests/Quizzes = 60% Make-up Work Procedures: It is the student’s responsibility to ask for the missed work. All students have (5) consecutive days, following their return to school after being absent, to make-up any missed work. No Exceptions. Late Work: NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED - The due date is the date the work is due. Rules and Procedures: At Entry: EVERY SINGLE DAY – Positive attitude and ready to get to work. Have a seat at your assigned desk and begin your warm-up assignment. All personal needs should be addressed before entry into the classroom: water, restroom, etc. Once you have entered, remain in the classroom. Students will not be able to leave class within the first or last 10 minutes of class. No Exceptions! ** (Teacher reviewed personal classroom policy each English class throughout the 1st week of school) ** Student Expectations: Students should always: 1. Be Prepared with all supplies & materials. Sharpen pencils after entering the classroom 2. Promote a Positive Learning Environment! Classroom Rules: 1. No personal grooming or eating in class. 2. Promote a Positive Learning Environment!... Tardiness: Students should be in class on time each day. Tardiness will be handled according to SHS campus Minor Violation policies and procedures (discussed in each English class 1 st week of school) Discipline Policy: Consequences: 1st time- Verbal Warning- the teacher will tell the student what she needs the student to change. 2nd time- Student conference 3rd time- Parent Call/Conference 4th time- Teacher D-Hall (Afterschool Detention with prior parent approval) 5th time- Referral (AP’s Office) Substitutes: If a substitute leaves a student’s name for teacher, it will result in an immediate referral to the assistant principal’s office upon the teacher’s return to class. There is no tolerance for misbehavior or disrespect to a substitute teacher.. **Late Work: NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED - The due date is the date the work is due. Shoemaker High School In accordance with KISD Board Policy EIA (Local), a student shall be permitted one opportunity to Re-do any assignment or retake any test for which the student received a failing grade. The student or parent must request the additional opportunity within 10 days of the grade being posted in the grade book. Campuses may determine additional and more specific criteria. The Re-do form and procedure are not applicable to Dual Credit classes as these are governed by the syllabus and overseen by the College. The Re-do form and procedure are not applicable to UIL Eligibility concerns. The student obtains the Re-do form from the teacher and he/she submits the FULLY COMPLETED form to the teacher, within ten school days of the assignment being posted in the grade book. Any student who wishes to re-do/retake any assignment or assessment must complete a minimum of one intervention session during the teacher’s regularly scheduled (posted) tutorial time. The actual re-doing of the assignment occurs in the teacher’s regularly scheduled (posted) tutorial time and duration of tutorial time. Re-do assignments or assessments will cover the same material, but the new assignment may have a different format or different questions. No Re-do shall extend beyond the semester grading period. This opportunity does not extend to semester exams or assessments, or final exams or assessments. The student will be awarded the average of the 2 grades achieved on the assignment or assessment.
