1. Delighting In Truth
Psalm 119: 1-8
Aleph
• Blessed are those whose way is blameless,
who walk in the law of the Lord.
• Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,
who seek him with their whole heart, who
also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!
Psalm 119: 1-8
• You have commanded your precepts to
be kept diligently.
• Oh that my ways may be steadfast in
keeping your statutes!
• Then I shall not be put to shame, having
my eyes fixed on all your
commandments.
Psalm 119: 1-8
• I will praise you with an upright heart, when I
learn your righteous rules.
• I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake
me!
Psalm 119:9-16
Beth
How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:9-16
Blessed are you, O LORD;
teach me your statutes!
With my lips I declare
all the rules of your mouth.
In the way of your testimonies I delight
as much as in all riches.

Psalm 119:100-105
- I have more understanding than the elders, for I
obey your precepts. I have kept my feet from every
evil path so that I might obey your word. I have not
departed from your laws, for you yourself have
taught me. How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain
understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate
every wrong path. Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light for my path.
2 Corinthians 9:8
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so
that in all things at all times, having all that you
need, you will abound in every good work
The Bible applied to the heart by the Holy Spirit, is
"the chief means by which men are built up and
strengthened in the faith," after their conversion. It
is able to make them pure, to sanctify them, to train
them in righteousness, and to thoroughly equip
them for every good work…
…The Spirit ordinarily does these things by the
written Word; sometimes by the Word read, and
sometimes by the Word preached, but seldom, if
ever, without the Word
John Piper
Truth without emotion produces dead orthodoxy
and a church full (or halffull) of artificial admirers
(like people who write generic anniversary cards for
a living). On the other hand, emotion without truth
produces empty frenzy and cultivates shallow
people who refuse the discipline of rigorous
thought. But true worship comes from people who
are deeply emotional and who love deep and sound
doctrine. Strong affections for God rooted in truth
are the bone and marrow of biblical worship

b. “After God had carried us safe to NewEngland, and wee had builded our houses, provided
necessaries for our livelihood, rear’d convenient
places for Gods worship, and setled the Civill
Government: One of the next things we longed for,
and looked after was to advance Learning and
perpetuate it to Posterity; dreading to leave an
illiterate Ministery to the Churches, when our
present Ministers shall lie in the Dust…

…. And as we were thinking and consulting how to
effect this great work, it pleased Got to stir up the
heart of one Mr. Harvard (a godly gentleman and a
lover of learning; then living amongst us) to give
one-half of his estate (it being in all about £1,700)
towards the erecting of a Colledge, and all his
library.” – New England First Fruits (1643)
Psalm 119:9-16
I will meditate on your precepts
and fix my eyes on your ways.
I will delight in your statutes;
I will not forget your word.
Prayer “To Every God”
May the fury of my lord's heart be quieted toward
me.
May the god who is not known be quieted toward
me;
May the goddess who is not known be quieted
toward me.
May the god whom I know or do not know be
quieted toward me;
May the goddess whom I know or do not know be
quieted toward me,
Prayer “To Every God”
May the heart of my god be quieted toward me;
May the heart of my goddess be quieted toward me.
May my god and goddess be quieted toward me.
May the god who has become angry with me be
quieted toward me,
May the goddess who has become angry with me be
quieted toward me.
In ignorance I have eaten that forbidden by my god;
In ignorance I have set foot on that prohibited by my
goddess.
Prayer “To Every God”
0 Lord, my transgressions are many; great are my
sins.
0 my god, (my) transgressions are many; great are
(my) sins.
my goddess, (my) transgressions are many; great are
(my) sins.
O god whom I know or do not know, (my)
transgressions are many; great are (my) sins,
O goddess whom I know or do not know, (my)
transgressions are many; great are (my) sins;
Prayer “To Every God”
The transgression which I have committed, indeed I
do not know;
The sin which I have done, indeed I do not know.
The forbidden thing which I have eaten, indeed I do
not know;
The prohibited (place) on which I have set foot,
indeed I do not know;
The lord in the anger of his heart looked at me;
The god in the rage of his heart confronted me;
Prayer “To Every God”
When the goddess was angry with me, she made me
become ill.
The god whom I know or do not know has oppressed
me;
The goddess whom I know or do not know has
placed suffering upon me.
Although I am constantly looking for help, no one
takes me by the hand;
Psalm 119:160
The sum of your word is truth,
and every one of your righteous rules
endures forever
Begin reading your Bible this very day. The way to
do a thing is to do it, and the way to read the Bible
is actually to read it. It is not meaning, or wishing, or
resolving, or intending, or thinking about it; that will
not advance you one step. You must positively read.
There is no royal road in this matter, any more than
in the matter of prayer…
…If you cannot read yourself, you must persuade
somebody else to read to you. But one way or
another, through eyes or ears, the words of
Scripture must actually pass before your mind.”
