A DEFINITIONS A Sonnet is a “lyric poem of 14 lines, commonly written in iambic pentameter” (Allen, 2008). A Stanza is a “group of two or more lines that forma unit in a poem” (Allen, 2008). In a sense, a stanza in a poem is equivalent to a paragraph in a prose text. A Volta is the “turn of thought or argument” (poetry foundation). Volta is the Italian word for “turn” and this is usually the point in the poem where the tone changes.
