Harrison Kim Period 5 2/12/09 Exercise #6: Applying Poetry Literary Devices 1. Sonnet 18Rhyme scheme: ABAB Simile: None Metaphor: None Imagery: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, too hot the eye of heaven shines Personification: Death brag, eternal lines to time thou growest Thinking Through the Literature 1. The basic comparison made in this poem is a woman to a summer day. 2.Undieing love. Some details that support this is he lists every bad thing about summer such as "summer's lease hath all too short a date" and "By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed" while he says that she is none of that and will never fade away. 2. Sonnet 30Rhyme scheme: ABAB Simile: None Metaphor: None Imagery: Pinned down by pain and moaning for release Personification: Man is making friends with death Thinking Through the Literature 1. I would find line 14 to be the most memorable. I found line fourteen to be the most romantic part of the whole sonnet and it is also describes how the author loved the person so much, they would not trade love for anything in the world. 2. All of the details used to describe "love is not all" have to do with material wants and needs for people to survive. For example, food and drink are needed to survive, roof for shelter, cleaning the blood and set fractured bone to help save lives. 4. The speaker's overall opinion of love seemed to be something that helps keep everyone alive and away from death. The sonnet includes a line where it says" yet many a man is making friends with death even as I speak, for lack of love alone" which means many people wish for death because they have no one to love and therefore no meaning in life. 5. Yes because they both follow the ABAB rhyme scheme and they both talk about their own meaning of love, Shakespeare with his summer lady and Millay with his idea of love. 6. I do believe the poems convey attitudes of love even today because they all talk about the true meaning of love. For example, Shakespeare talks about one of the most beautiful things on Earth, summer, and makes his woman look 1000 times better. Also with Millay, he talks about how love is better than anything in this world and without love, life is meaningless. 3. Love is not what we want, but what we all need love is not your favorite food or drink love is not a video game or a TV love is a necessity that's what I think Love is required to sustain life love is a window to people's true selves love does not start any strife love is like a library another can delve Love may not be our favorite toy love may not be our beloved ecstasies you may not think that love can bring you joy but love is the only thing to bring about pleasant memories Many don't know what love is about, But what love truly is, is everything we need
