SAMPLE 2L LETTER Arial 10 Pt. Font 115 S. Belmont Street, Apt. 126 Madison, WI 53703 July 13, 2009 Ms. Rachel McCullough Leonard & Slatkin LLP Legal Recruiting Coordinator 1595 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY 10036 Dear Ms. McCullough: Please consider me for a summer associate position at Leonard & Slatkin LLP. I will be a second-year student at the University of Wisconsin Law School and am particularly interested in litigation. Your firm interests me because of its challenging work environment and commitment to providing clients with creative and cutting edge solutions. I would be honored to be part of such a highly regarded firm. My resume is attached for your review. My interest in litigation was sparked when I worked as a paralegal for the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice. As a Women’s Studies major I had little experience with the tax code and foreign currency trading, but by the end of my time with the DOJ, I had worked with experts to analyze complex financial documents and had created PowerPoint presentations for court hearings to explain how foreign currency trading was used to create a tax shelter. This experience was thoroughly enjoyable because of the intellectually stimulating work environment that challenged me to learn new skills quickly and to devise solutions to complex legal matters. I also provided creative solutions in a stressful environment during my two years on Capitol Hill as a legislative aide for U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton. During the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, after an urgent call to the Senator from a group of college-bound foster care youth, I was called upon to work on a very short deadline to draft an emergency amendment regarding foster care and college financial aid, and then to work with other congressional staff to get it adopted. As a result of my work, these youths were able to be adopted by their families and still qualify for federal loans and grants for their education. From this experience I learned the importance of never finding a task insurmountable, especially when it can make a difference in a person’s life. I believe the skills I have gained as a legislative aide and a paralegal, as well as my ability to work in challenging and high pressure environments, would make me a valuable addition to your firm. Thank you in advance for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Moxy Evans Enclosure
