Course Description:
This practical and applied course introduces you to fundamental and advanced aspects of product development The class addresses the challenges of idea development and evaluation for commercial feasibility, building a business case, and design/development of products and services, as well as the requirements and demands of commercialization.
Course Overview:
MGT572—Decision Theory within the Global Marketplace provides conceptual, and practical instruction for upstream new product or service conceptualization, creation, and commercialization. The stage-gate new product management process provides a framework for the course. However, additional materials are included to provide an understanding of the role of the product manager, qualitative analysis techniques, strategy, appropriate organizational structure and control, intellectual property protection, and issues encountered as products and services enter markets outside the home country.
The readings include those drawn from the text, readings that illustrate particular concepts, and readings that provide examples of real companies and people involved in new product development. The Portfolio
Project involves modeling the new product development process by demonstrating the ideation of the new product/service, making a business case for the new product/service, describing how the new product/service effort is managed and controlled, describing how the product/service would be beta tested, describing the necessary cross-functional preparations for launch, and how the launch would be conducted in market outside of the home country. The final Portfolio Project is a text-based PowerPoint slide presentation. That is, the PowerPoint presentation will include narration employing PowerPoint’s Notes option to write a text-based narration to accompany the slides.

Provide an overview of the industry in which the organization competes. Who are the competitors? Select one of Porter’s five forces to illustrate how you would gather industry information.
Provide an overview of the market served by the organization. Select one type of factor to show what specific data you would gather about market segmentation. See Table 4.2 in textbook.
