MESSAGE FROM OUR PATRON
It has been my pleasure over many years as the Society’s Patron to welcome our
entrants from near and far to take part in our annual Festival. This year, 2014, the Society
is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee. This of course is a milestone for us and the committee
are anxious that we can continue to grow. We are the first Competition Society in the
Greater Auckland area to reach this milestone. However, we are comparatively young
when we compare ourselves with our provincial counterparts.
Like most voluntary organisations, the committee needs to be injected with additional
support if we are to continue to move forward. This can only happen if some of our local
supporters become more involved in the Society’s activities. I would like to endorse the
words in our President’s message that we will not be able to continue unless our
committee becomes re-energised with new blood.
Our Society is proud to be able to provide a platform for talent in the performing arts to be
seen and heard in an atmosphere that promotes healthy competition between amateur
performers. The Society’s committee have worked hard to prepare this programme for
our competitors and for the enjoyment of the Society’s supporters.
My very best wishes go to each of you as you compete in your classes. Competitions are
not only about competing, they are also about hearing and seeing others perform,
hearing new music and making new friends. It is an opportunity for you to meet people
with interests similar to yours and to form lasting friendships. Some of you will have
participated in our previous competitions and we thank you for coming back and giving us
the pleasure of seeing you perform once again. I would like to extend a special welcome
to those of you who are new to the North Shore Competitions.
The Society’s committee makes every effort to ensure that your participation in our
classes will be enjoyable for you. In doing so it aims to provide unbiased adjudication by
adjudicators with the highest professional standards. Over the years many of our
competitors have gone on to join orchestras, participate in shows and choirs, perform in
theatre, opera and dance, whilst some have become solo performers both nationally and
internationally.
I would like to thank the business community and individual donors for assisting with
sponsoring our Annual Festival, and our hardworking committee members for their
voluntary time and effort in making these competitions possible each year. I hope that
those of you who are visitors to the North Shore will take the opportunity to explore some
of our recreational facilities and support our local business community.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
It is with great pleasure that the committee of the North Shore Performing Arts Society
presents this year’s Diamond Jubilee programme.
I would like to echo our Patron’s acknowledgement of all our generous sponsors and voluntary
helpers. Without their invaluable support we would not be able to bring this series of programmes
to you. However we are in urgent need of assistance in running our annual competition Festival.
Committees and Convenors are both areas in which we require additional help.
If we are to continue, the committee needs to be re-energised with new blood. Unless this
happens we will not be able to sustain the Festival into the future and this year could well
be our last.
I would like to extend a warm thank you to all the competitors who have sent in their entries, to all the
teachers who have encouraged their students to participate, and to our loyal band of helpers. I hope
that for performers and audience alike the experience will prove both enjoyable and positive.
Programmes for the individual art forms can be viewed on our website www.nspas.org.nz

JANICE WEBB, ADJUDICATOR
Originally a school teacher, Janice’s thirty years at the chalkboard were paralleled by her
performance career, which included the making of numerous recordings and broadcasts for
the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation (now Radio New Zealand) as well as taking lead
roles in operas, operettas, musicals and oratorios throughout the country. However, the
growing successes of her students – including winners of the Mobil (now Lexus) Song Quest
and the New Zealand Herald Aria – saw her leaving the schoolyard and the stage to
concentrate solely on teaching singing. This in turn led to her adjudicating throughout the
country and also teaching at the New Zealand Singing School.
As a singing tutor, Janice’s main focus has always been to develop the voices of her pupils,
but she was also aware of the importance of stagecraft. To give her pupils performance
opportunities she developed the innovative idea of monthly SING concerts. These have
made an invaluable contribution to her student’s tuition, many of whom have gone on to
thriving careers in opera and music theatre both here and overseas. A celebration of over
two decades of SING is taking place in the Bruce Mason Theatre in August this year.
Janice feels very privileged to have been asked to adjudicate this very special Diamond
Jubilee year of the North Shore Performing Arts Society. She so appreciates the opportunity
it gives her to enjoy the wondrous singers of the future. Over the past six decades many of
New Zealand’s foremost singers will have taken to the stage at these very competitions.
ROSEMARY BARNES, OFFICIAL ACCOMPANIST
Rosemary is one of New Zealand’s most respected resident collaborative pianists. Since
returning in 1993 from almost three decades in London, where she was on the Music Staff of
English National Opera and worked on over a dozen recordings for the Opera Rara label,
she has appeared in recital with many of our leading singers (Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Dame
Malvina Major, Margaret Medlyn, Patricia Wright, Helen Medlyn, Carmel Carroll, Simon
O’Neill, Richard Greager, Barry Mora, Grant Dickson), and with numerous local and
international instrumentalists. She also gives many recitals every year with the younger
generation of performers
Teaching and coaching have always been a large part of Rosemary’s career. In London she
coached young singers and pianists at Morley College and the Royal College of Music,
whilst maintaining her own private studio of professional singers from all over the world.
From 1993-99 she was director of the post-graduate opera diploma at the University of
Auckland. Nowadays she coaches advanced voice students at the University, as well as
coaching the Emerging Artists for New Zealand Opera. Rosemary is music director of Opera
Factory (she has several opera translations to her credit) and adjudicates voice and piano.
In the 2000 Queen’s Birthday Honours she received an MNZM for her services to music.

GENERAL CONDITIONS FOR COMPETITORS
Please read the conditions carefully- they must be strictly observed!
1 Order of Performance Competitors’ names will appear in the Programme in the
order in which they will compete, unless pre-arranged by the Stage Manager. All
competitors must be in attendance at least 15 minutes prior to the
commencement of the class. Starting times are listed in the Programme. Those not
present when called may, at the discretion of the Stage Manager, forfeit the right to
compete.
2 Stage No person other than officials, performers and stage prop handlers are
permitted in the wings during performances.
3 Music The use of photocopied music on the stage is not permitted.
4 Cameras, Video Cameras & Mobile Phones The taking of photographs with or
without flash is PROHIBITED during a performance. Photographs may be taken of
your own child or student only at either the commencement or conclusion of a
performance. However because of abuse of the privilege, VIDEO RECORDING IS
NOT PERMITTED except for NCEA assessment, when permission from the Vocal
Convenor must be obtained in advance. Written confirmation from the school will be
needed to show that the video is required for the assessment.
5 Prizes Prizes will be awarded at the adjudicator’s discretion. If there are fewer than
four entrants, only the first prize will be awarded. This rule may not apply to
individually sponsored classes. If there is a tie for first place, the adjudicator has the
right to recall both performers to determine a winner. Should a first equal be
awarded, the first and second prize monies will be amalgamated and shared equally
6 Trophies All trophies remain the property of the Society. Trophies must be
returned to the Society’s office no later than 1 March of the year following the
presentation. The engraving of trophies and cups is the responsibility of the winner.
SPECIAL AWARDS
1 The LES & SONIA ANDREWS CULTURAL FOUNDATION will award a travel grant of
$1000 to the winner or next placed finalist of the Becroft Aria. A condition of this award is
that the winner must be able to sing in the heats of the McDonald’s Aria later that year in
Sydney at the time designated for the Becroft Aria winner. In 2014 that time will be July 24
at 5pm.
2 The PRESIDENT’S CUP will be awarded to the Most Promising Vocalist.
3 The LES KITNEY MEMORIAL TROPHY will be awarded to the singer gaining the highest
