Curriculum Vitae FHI 360 Biodata Form Proposed daily rate Background The 2008 Lancet series on Maternal and Child Undernutrition classified Ghana among the 36 countries with the highest burden of childhood chronic undernutrition globally. Undernutrition is a major public health and developmental challenge in Ghana and is characterized by high rates of stunting, underweight, wasting and micronutrient deficiencies throughout the country with some regional variations. The northern regions (Upper East, Upper West, and Northern) and Central Region have the highest rates of stunting and wasting, which are closely linked with diseases and food insecurity. Concurrent with undernutrition, overnutrition, including overweight and obesity, has resulted in increasing rates of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and gout, which are emerging health concerns. To address the high rates of malnutrition (undernutrition and overnutrition), the Ministry of Health/Ghana Health Service (MOH/GHS) and other Government of Ghana (GoG) sectors have implemented a number of interventions to prevent and control underweight, stunting, wasting, micronutrient deficiencies, overweight and obesity. On-going nutrition-specific interventions include: • • • • • • Micronutrient supplementation and food fortification Supplementary feeding in food insecure areas Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition Growth monitoring and promotion Appropriate Infant and Young Child Feeding practices Maternal health and nutrition *Pending donor approval, travel may be required for the completion of the scope of work Additionally, nutrition-sensitive interventions such as actions to increase food security, provide adequate health care, control and treat disease, improve hygiene and sanitation, increase education and reduce poverty are supported by relevant sectors and address underlying causes of undernutrition. Implementation strategies, guidelines, and protocols have been developed for the aforementioned interventions and service providers have provided in-service trainings. However, these strategies, guidelines, and protocols have not always been widely disseminated to pre-service training institutions. The MOH/GHS is currently in the process of finalizing a National Nutrition Policy that will provide a comprehensive nutrition programming framework including relevant multi-sector linkages. One of the main strategic issues addressed in the National Nutrition Policy is the need to build institutional and human capacity as part of strengthening the quality of nutrition service delivery at national and subnational levels. Nurses and midwives play a vital role as frontline health care providers and are often responsible for delivering nutrition services at the facility and community level. It is essential that all nurses and midwives have adequate knowledge, skills, and attitudes to deliver quality nutrition services and are abreast of the most recent policies, strategies, guidelines, and protocols on nutrition in Ghana. A competency-based training approach will be used to strengthen the current nursing and midwifery pre-service training on nutrition. Eight steps will be implemented during the process, which include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
