The Globe- A Typical Elizabethan

Playhouse

The Globe’s History

• Built in 1599 of timbers ‘stolen’ from a theatre north of the

Thames by the Chamberlain’s men

• The timbers were transported across a frozen Thames during one of the harshest winters in history.

• Destroyed in 1613 and subsequently rebuilt the following year.

• Closed by Puritans in 1642.

• Levelled in 1644 to make way for tenements.

• Rediscovered in 1989 & rebuilt

205 metres away on London’s fashionable South Bank. The new Globe Theatre opened in

1997.

Othello, The Moor of Venice

• Othello is often deemed a

‘domestic’ tragedy and focuses on jealousy and its consequences.

• It tells the tale of Othello, commander in the Venetian army, his loyal and loving wife,

Desdemona, and their ruination at the hands of the evil Iago, the

Moor’s duplicitous and diabolical right-hand man.

• The play is partially set in sixteenth century Venice, then an independent Italian state. The citystate was at war with the Turks and part of the action is set in

Cyprus.

• Othello is a typical Shakespearian tragic hero, noble of speech and action, yet with a fatal flaw; he has a tragic propensity to jealousy.

Shakespeare’s craft

In his rendering of the drama

Shakespeare utilises the following:

• Soliloquy

• Irony

• Exposition

• Characterisation

• Dialogue

• Conflict between characters

• Revelation

• Climax

• Denouement

• Resolution
