GKAS 2010 Committee Meeting
6/3/09 – Dave and Buster’s
Meeting Minutes
Members in Attendance: Chris Salierno (Chair), Victor Grazina, Scott Firestone, Nick Vittoria, Jeff Seiver
Site Selection: Drs. Grazina and Seiver will discuss with Dr. Lane regarding the possibility of holding the
event at the South Hampton Stony Brook campus. If this location is not practical, we will hold the event at
the Museum of the East End.
Action Items: Drs. Grazina, Lane, and Seiver will reach a consensus regarding the location and present at
the next meeting.
Volunteers: Dr. Salierno is awaiting a reply from the Long Island chapter of the AHA regarding recruiting
volunteers for the events. It was also discussed that SCDS members may be encouraged to participate if
there were a CE incentive. Although CE credits cannot be given for volunteer work, it may be possible that
a volunteer could receive a voucher for SCDS CE events to discount the tuition.
Action Item: Dr. Seiver will meet with the Education Committee to explore the possibility of presenting
vouchers to volunteers.

Coen Brothers Films

There are several kinds of Coen Brothers Films that could be categorized in several different ways.
Coen Brothers movies include: Blood Simple, The Man Who Wasn’t There, No Country for Old Men, Raising Arizona, Barton
Fink, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Hudsucker Proxy, The Big Lebowski, Intolerable Cruelty, Burn After Reading, Miller’s
Crossing, and Fargo, to name a few.
Are you actually still reading this? Do you like the Coen Brothers? I think they’re great. They’ve won lots of Oscars. Not
that that is a consistent measure of a film. Remember when Titanic won Best Picture? That movie sucks. James Cameron is
a great director, and I like Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, but the story is just too cheesy for my tastes. It’s predictable and
seems perfectly engineered for tears. LA Confidential totally should have won that year.
Oh, man, I think I broke my toe. It’s black and blue, but I can still move it. Should I see a doctor?
Let’s divide the types of Coen Brothers films into: Comedy, Drama, and Dramedy. Really all of their movies have comedic
and dramatic elements. But , hey, we’re trying to categorize them, so we’re going to have to make some tough decisions
about which film should go in which category.
Drama: Blood Simple, The Man Who Wasn’t There, No Country for Old Men. Comedy: Raising Arizona, Barton Fink, O
Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Hudsucker Proxy, The Big Lebowski, Intolerable Cruelty, Burn After Reading. Dramedy:
Miller’s Crossing, and Fargo
Some of you might say that No Country for Old Men should be in the Dramedy category because its been compared to
Fargo a lot. But I think it really is more of a dramatic piece. The violence is more disturbing whereas the violence in Fargo is
almost comical. Also, the themes of No Country for Old Men are much darker then Fargo’s. Hey, if you disagree, why don’t
you come up with your own freaking list? No one’s stopping you. I’m sure it’ll be great… really.
Man, I love lists. Isn’t it fun to come up with lists? I’m not good at Top Ten or Top Five lists, though. It’s hard for me to pick
my favorites and put them in an order. Some people don’t have a problem with it, but I hate committing to an exact order.
