Method of Determining Final Grade and Important Dates: Exam I 40% Wednesday October 7, 2009 Exam II 40% Saturday December 12, 2009 9:00 am Presentation and Paper 20% TBA Course Objectives: This course will introduce you to the following concepts and issues: approaches to management; evolution of management; comparative international management; planning and strategic management; control; organizational structure; motivation; teamwork; organizational change; organizational culture; communication; HRM; decision making; operations management; leadership USC Honor Code: It is the responsibility of every student at the University of South Carolina Columbia to adhere steadfastly to truthfulness and to avoid dishonesty, fraud, or deceit of any type in connection with any academic program. Presentation and Paper: Students will form teams early in the semester and be assigned a topic. The team will make an oral presentation on the topic (approximately 15-20 minutes in length) and develop a team paper (approximately 7-8 pages). The team paper should parallel the presentation and is due at the time of the presentation. Professionalism and creativity are encouraged during the presentation. Work sessions will be provided. If needed, a mechanism for policing a noncontributing team member will be provided. The mechanism can remove and penalize a noncontributing member. Exams: Exams can consist of any combination of multiple choice, fill in the blank, true/false, and/or short answer questions. Each exam can consist two parts. The first from lectures and the second can come from assigned readings that are not covered in class. Exam Make-ups: Generally, there will be no make-ups given. Request for a make-up must be accompanied with the appropriate documentation and made in a reasonable time after the missed exam. It is the student’s responsibility to get with me and make all of the approved logistical arrangements. Course Description: This is a lecture based course that requires you to attend, take good notes, and study to be successful. An introductory or survey course like MGMT 371 will require overall understanding, learning lists of facts, participating in team exercises, and learning new vocabulary terms. Attendance Policy: It is the policy of the University of South Carolina that absence from more than 10% of scheduled classes is excessive. I believe that this is a liberal policy and encourage you to attend every class. Some exam questions will come from lecture material that is not in the text.
