When can I study?
•
•
•
Typically anytime after your first year (or completed 30 credits)
Many students go abroad during Sophomore & Junior year,
but there is no set rule—many go Senior year. It’s very individual.
Check your major/minor requirements and find the best time for you
to map out a study abroad program in your grad plan
Start Planning Now!
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
We recommend to start planning a year in advance of departure
Consider courses of interest abroad
Pay attention to deadlines (application, scholarships, etc.)
Get a passport
Carefully follow the application process
We strongly encourage you to talk with your academic advisor about ideal courses to
fulfill while abroad
Use the Study Abroad Approved Foreign Course database when planning which courses to
take abroad
How to make it work
It’s important to:
• Plan early, draft a budget, save money, apply for aid & scholarships
• Understand the importance of budgeting
• Be realistic about your finances & manage your money wisely while abroad
• Keep in mind there may be unplanned expenses for additional travel
• Save money for souvenirs, shopping and your true spending habits!
TIPS: Work extra hours in the summer, save 10% from every paycheck, get rid of your “stuff”
and have a garage/craigslist sale.
Most students want to travel while abroad. Make sure to save money for that as well!
Costs
• There are programs that cost less than, the same or more
than what you pay for tuition at UMD
• Semester & Year programs students only pay a “Study
Abroad Program Fee” - you do not pay UMD’s tuition in
addition to the study abroad program fee (or foreign
university).
• The Short-term program fee includes the costs of credits
(FYI: Keep in mind you’re not comparing apples to apples in cost when considering a short-term
program vs. a semester year program. The air-fare estimate will be relatively the same whether you’re
taking a short-term program for 3-6 credits compared to semester/year programs with 15+ credits.)
Program Fees
Each program is different. It’s important to understand what the program fee includes.
•
•
Use the Study Abroad Budget Worksheet tool to compare costs of programs
Things to look at:
– Are there additional out-of-pocket expenses?
– Is airfare included?
– Is room & board included? (aka room and meals?)
– Are optional excursions included?
– Do you need additional immigration documents, besides a passport?
If additional expenses are not noted by your program provider, request a total cost
estimate for your intended study abroad program
- You can bring the cost breakdown of a study abroad program that you are interested
in to the UMD One Stop Office and they should be able to give you an approximate
estimate of what you may receive in financial aid
Financial Aid
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
UMD Financial Aid is applicable to study abroad (with the exception of tuition waivers)
Complete the FAFSA as you would if you were to attend UMD normally
Study Abroad staff will send UMD Financial Aid your total estimated program expense
– This includes required expenses for your participation
– Required fees do not include personal travel, socializing or souvenir expenses (so when planning, be
realistic how much extra personal money you might want to save for personal funds!)
– If your program costs less than attending UMD, you will only receive enough aid to cover your program
expenses
– Winter Break program expenses are included in your spring financial aid
– May/Summer Program financial aid can be requested if enrolled in 6+ credits
Most students do not receive financial aid beyond what they receive while attending UMD
Private education loans can be used
Alternative loans & scholarships are available to cover additional costs
Detailed information on types of loans and aid available on the web:
— UMD Financial Aid: www.d.umn.edu/fareg/

Affiliate program providers bill their program fees directly to students (not through UMD).
Financial aid remaining on your account is refunded to you and you are responsible for paying
all Affiliate program fees. (Note: some Affiliate bills are due before UMD financial aid is
disbursed; you may ask the Affiliate for an extension to pay them after UMD financial aid is
disbursed.) It is recommended you setup direct deposit to receive your aid in your personal
account.
UM-System study abroad fees (including the application fee) are billed on a separate student
account by the coordinate campus. Financial aid however is processed at UMD.
Scholarships
• UMD Study Abroad awards scholarships yearly
- Award amounts depend on program length
- Requirements, details & online application and essay info on our website
* Note: Scholarships are a bonus and will not pay for the bulk of your program fee
• External scholarship opportunities are available; links available on our website
- There are large scholarship amounts typically awarded to students who receive
a Pell Grant
- Some scholarships favor students who identify with an underrepresented
population and/or study in a less popular study abroad location and area
of study
- Research all scholarship options to see which ones you’re eligible for
Working Abroad
Working while you study abroad is an option in some countries.
•
•
•
•
Earn additional money in your country’s currency (save it for travel!)
Get to know the culture, meet people in the community & fully understand
what it’s like to participate in a society outside of the U.S.
Research which countries will allow you to work while studying abroad if this is
something you want to pursue.
Some programs have built-in service-learning internship & volunteer
opportunities. Plan early if you are interested in these options.
Courses
All credits earned will count as UMD credit, apply to your cumulative GPA and credit
accumulation—and will show up on your UMD transcript. All courses must be prereviewed and approved at UMD to determine how they will contribute to your degree.
Course Review
• Study Abroad staff work with UMD departments to have foreign courses taken abroad reviewed
• It can take 2–4 weeks for the review process (sometimes longer)
• Complete the course review process before you go abroad so you know how your courses will
count towards your UMD degree
• Check the UMD Study Abroad Course Search database on the study abroad website to see if
courses you wish to take are listed & have been pre-approved. If pre-approved you don’t need to
do anything further—but double check and make sure the course is still available abroad (as
course reviews expire every 5 years after they are reviewed)
• If courses you want to take aren’t in the database, you must get them reviewed
–
–
–
–
–
You aren’t limited to what’s on the database
Turn in a copy of the course syllabi (in English) to our office
Complete a course review cover sheet, one per syllabus
The Study Abroad office will send the documents to the appropriate UMD department to review
Once reviewed, you will be notified via email and the course will be added to the database

our Office
Transcripts
•
•
•
•
Official transcripts need to be submitted to the Study Abroad office
at the end of your program. UMD host institutions and affiliates typically send
these directly to the UMD Study Abroad office on your behalf.
Once your transcript is received your grades will be posted to your UMD account
Courses taken abroad show up on your transcript as a FORS (foreign studies)
course, with the title of the course from your host institution
When all of your study abroad courses have been reviewed and approved at UMD
and your study abroad grades are posted, the Study Abroad office will send this
information to your collegiate unit. They will make APAS amendments so the
courses you took abroad are applied to your degree progress

Attend Study Abroad 101…..(check!)
Make a list of your goals: Prioritize what is most important to you regarding your education abroad
experience. Examples of things to consider: country of study, language, subject area, length, cost and
desired experiences you want to have abroad (travel, program support, excursions, weather/season...)
Meet with your academic advisor: It is important to be in contact with your academic advisor when
you are looking for programs and when you have decided on a program to discuss course options
abroad and when you return to UMD. Look at foreign courses that have already been approved at
UMD and start to consider which courses you might take abroad. If there are courses that haven’t been
approved, look into getting them reviewed at UMD so they can count towards your degree.
Utilize the Study Abroad office: We are here to assist you in every step of your experience abroad.
We have friendly student and professional staff with international experience available to answer your
questions. Attend various events & info sessions to learn about specific programs (check out the UMD
Events Calendar online)
Search for programs that match your goals. Start with our website: d.umn.edu/studyabroad. Other
resources: Study Abroad staff, friends and peers, professors, blogs, and your academic advisor.
Apply to a study abroad program and start to prepare and get excited for your experience of a lifetime!
