Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC 3 )
Are Your Students Behind Before They Begin?
Research tells us 1 in every 4 freshman entering U.S. higher education is unable to stay in school, let alone graduate.
• They own PDAs, share music and video files, they know how use technology – but is it the right technology they need to know ?
• Exposure to computers doesn’t equal understanding.
How many freshmen lack fundamental digital skills?
• Recent study conducted at four-year university found only 7% of incoming freshmen tested could meet standards of digital literacy
• 93% were not digitally literate!
Internet and Computing Core Certification
The Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³®) provides students with the foundation of knowledge they need to succeed in environments that require the use of computers and the Internet. The Global Standard 4
(Released Nov. 2012) is an internationally recognized standard for digital literacy and reflects the most relevant skills needed in today's academic and business environments.

Tallahassee Community College
• The Division of Technology and Professional Programs offers a Computer Literacy course as a general elective for all college students who may need to meet a particular program requirement and also satisfies TCC’s requirement for demonstrating computer literacy.
• Administrators wanted to redesign the Computer Literacy course, but the challenge was to ensure the new course aligned with industry needs.
• They redesigned the Computer Literacy course to incorporate IC³. The new course requires students to take the IC³ certification exams as tests in the course.
• During the first semester IC³ certification was offered at TCC, 85 Computer Literacy students obtained certification. The popularity of the exam has grown, and in 5 semesters, 539 students have earned certification.

At Michigan State we have experienced that the certifications are crucial in presenting a person’s skill and aptitude in order to obtain a specific job. Certified people are usually hired over those that are not. In addition to the value for the student, our ability to offer this service to our clients brings them in to our facility to be able to see what else we have to offer. Kind of a win-win for all."
