Identify serving sizes for each food category on the food pyramid. Explain the nutrients provided by foods from each category. State Standards: 8th or 9th grade health: 2.1: Understands foundations of Health 1.5: Understands relationship of nutrition and food nutrients to body composition and physical performance. Activity: Students will be placed in groups of 4 or 5 to work together as a team for the game of Jeopardy. There will be 5 teams total Each person from the team will get a chance to write and state the teams answer to the rest of the class. Each member of the team must agree with the answer before a team is allowed to share it. Every student will have the opportunity to pick a question for their team. This activity will take place as a way to debrief and assess student’s basic knowledge on nutrition. It is meant as a way for students to apply their knowledge in a new format than done in prior lessons. Every student should be knowledge and aware of healthy food options and how to manage how much food they should be eating in a day. With obesity becoming more prevalent in the United States it is important to help students understand how important eating healthy is. Teaching them this information in fun interactive ways helps students learn and remember the information without even realizing what they are doing. Alyssa Kelley Current Technology Assignment T&L 466 Applying Knowledge: This lesson is meant to help finalize the basic nutrition information before the students receive their final assignment for the nutrition curriculum. This assignment requires students to create a three month long diet for themselves (it is important to realize that in a nutritional setting the word diet is used to mean the food a person eats, not a way to adjust what someone eats to lose weight). The game of Nutrition Jeopardy allows students to apply the basic knowledge they will need to understand and remember to be successful in completing their final project. Closure: Nutritonal Jeopardy is meant to be a way to asses students prior knowledge on nutrition before asking them to start on their indepth diet assignment. Having students work together to find answers helps students to learn from each other not just the teacher. This lesson helps students not only master nutrition information but work on communication, team work, collaboration and other social skills while participating in an interactive learning activity.
