Each year the Washington Ireland Program (WIP) brings
together a team of talented young people, who commit to a 6month program of service and leadership development. Central to
the program is an 8 week leadership program in Washington DC,
the centre of American democracy and political power. Along the
way participants gain valuable exposure to key leadership
challenges while gaining critical skills in communication,
networking, management, planning and organizing and
teamwork. Participants have the opportunity to learn from leading
political and social leaders in the US, Ireland and Northern
Ireland and are encouraged to think critically about their own role
in society.

JSPS SUMMER PROGRAMME 2014
The JSPS
Summer
Programme
provides the
opportunity
for current
MPhil or PhD students to receive a one week orientation on
Japanese culture and research systems on arrival and then move
to a host institution in Japan of their choice and approved by
JSPS, to conduct collaborative research activities for 2 months
during the summer.
The award includes Return international airfare, maintenance
allowance, domestic research trip allowance, research-related
expense allowance.
Eligibility: Applicants need to be a UK national and a current
MPhil or PhD student based at a UK university or research
institution. Eligible research fields are not limited.

QUEEN’S ANNUAL FUND:
APPLY FOR PROJECT
FUNDING
Applications are now invited
for project funding from the Queen's Annual Fund. Established in
May 1999, the Fund supports and enhances all aspects of the
Queen’s student experience.
The deadline for submitting applications is 12.00pm, Friday 15
November 2013. Please allow enough time in your planning to
obtain quotes from suppliers who are providing necessary
services as they will be required as part of your application.

These sessions offer broad guidance on the 'nuts and bolts' of
dissertations generally. Working through the contents page of a
sample dissertation, the session demonstrates exactly how a

Refworks is an online bibliographic management program that
allows users to create a personal database of references and

JAMES BOND CREATIVE THINKING WORKSHOP
Creative Thinking Workshop: Wednesday,27 November
from 17:30 to 20:00, IPSC, Seminar room 1
James Bond, 007, understands victory and winning. Bond has
incredible ability to out think everyone else. Our economy is
moving at pace and is becoming increasingly complex. It needs
fast thinking postgraduate students to make it strong. Let’s face
it, “You Only Live Once”! In this evening workshop, we will
explore ways of thinking faster and further than anyone else.
Professor Curious will challenge the audience to think differently.

Introduction to Excel: Monday 25 November, 14.00-17.00. 3rd
floor Peter Froggatt Centre
This practical course is the essential starting point for anyone
interested in learning how to produce Spreadsheets using
Microsoft Office Excel 2010 and forms an ideal basis for further
courses in Excel. Excel 1: Essentials covers the basics of how to
create,
save
and
edit
Spreadsheets
before
progressing
participants onto the creation of basic formulas and charts. The
new cell and table styles will be introduced and participants will
learn fundamental techniques such as sorting, naming ranges,
find and replace, changing the page setup and renaming
worksheets.
Refining your Web Searches: Monday, 2 December, 14.00-17.00.

This course incorporates:1) various useful tips for making better
use of search engines. The session will 2) provide an opportunity
to look at the issues around determining the quality of information
on the Internet. Participants will review quality assured reference
sites and will explore and discuss the factors which help users
judge the relative quality of Web sites and Web-based material.
Participants should have a basic familiarity with Web browsing.
PowerPoint for Beginners: Tuesday, 3 December, 10.00-13.00,
028, 3rd floor PFC
This course provides participants with an opportunity to learn
about more advanced features in PowerPoint 2010 in order to
incorporate
interactivity
and
multimedia
in
presentations. Intended for participants who are already familiar
with the basic concepts of creating PowerPoint presentations,
topics covered will include flow charts, tables, action buttons,
working with images and shapes and using master slides and
templates.

This talk looks at various types of though patterns that may inhibit
our ability to complete the things we want to do, and suggests
some ideas to help overcome these obstacles.

This talk considers what might make it difficult for someone to

BOUNDARIES IN NINETY SECONDS
OR LESS”: HUMANITIES SPEEDNETWORKING
Institute for Collaborative Research in the Humanities invites
post-graduate students to share your research interests over a
social drink.
An informal speed networking event where you introduce yourself
to other post-graduates from across the humanities. This meeting
welcomes post-graduates to the Institute and its forthcoming
program for those interested in collaborative activities for
interdisciplinary work.

BRITISH LIBRARY DOCTORAL OPEN DAY – SOCIAL
SCIENCES, 2 AND 13 DECEMBER
The British Library is a hub for Social Sciences research, with
vast and varied collections, expert staff and a wide range of
events. Subjects covered include sociology, social policy,
anthropology, sports, human geography, politics, sociolinguistics
and business and management studies.
Their Doctoral Open Days are a chance for new PhD students to
discover the Library’s unique research materials. Students will
learn about our Social Sciences collections, find out how to
access
them, and meet our expert staff and other researchers in their
field. This event is aimed at first year PhD students who are new
to the Library. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

MIND YOUR MOOD: FREE WORKSHOPS
Mind Your Mood is a student-led
Mental Health Awareness and
Education campaign offering free
workshops to over 1,500 Queen's
students and staff this year. The
workshops begin this week.
Workshops are facilitated by trained
professionals from Aware NI, one of
the country’s leading Mental Health
awareness organisations. The Mood Matters workshops have
been developed by consultant psychiatrists and other healthcare
professionals, using the most up-to-date NICE guidelines.
Each workshop will last between 2-3 hours with light
refreshments provided.

CONVOCATION ANNUAL LECTURE AND MEETING
The Annual Meeting of Convocation will take place on Thursday
21 November 2013 at 7pm in the Council Chamber, Lanyon
Building.
The Meeting will commence with the Convocation Lecture which
will be delivered by Professor Stephen Smartt, Director of
the Astrophysics Research Centre at Queen’s.
The lecture will be entitled: ‘The origin of life in the centre of stars’
Anyone is welcome to attend the Lecture and booking is not
necessary

MOVEMBER LAUNCH
AT QUEEN’S
Queen's kicked off the
university-wide Movember campaign last Wednesday with a
lunchtime shaving event in the Great Hall. To watch the Q in 60

So far, staff, students and alumni have raised over £2,000 for

FREE WEEKLY EVENTS @ THE POSTGRADUATE STUDENT
CENTRE:

Breakfast Club is held every Tuesday at 10.30. The
Centre offers free coffee, tea, juice, toast, and other
breakfast treats.

Happy Hour is every Wednesday at 15.00-16.00. The
Centre offers free coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and biscuits.

Cake Club is held every Friday at 14.00. Please come
along with whatever you have rustled up and bring your
recipe to share. Thanks to everyone who came along
and supported last week’s Halloween bake sale in the
centre. £180 was raised for CRAQ (Children’s Rights
at Queen’s), so a big thank-you to all involved!

Postgraduate book Club: The next Postgraduate book
club meeting is Thursday 28 November at 3pm in the
Social Space. This month's book for discussion is ‘The
Husband’s Secret’ by Liane Moriarty. New members are
always welcome, keep up to date by joining the facebook
page. There are a few copies of the book available for
rent for the first floor of the I&PSC.
