“Panihari lock sangeet” is an initiative to collaborate with the various rajasthani
folk performing artists of rajasthan.this project conceived in barmer ,rajasthan
by Roshan Khan &Group a folklore promoter of rajasthan. Roshan is Working
with over two hundred of folk artist of rajasthan from last 7years.
The “panihari group”has a vision and mission to ensemble the top class folk
performing artist of rajasthan to come up with different performing art genre to
showcase their talent at national and international platforms.

MUSIC
Rajasthani Music & Dance, the vast unending expanse of burning hot sand that makes up the Thar Desert
of Rajasthan hosts one of the most vibrant and evocative music cultures of the world. The heady, hypnotic
combination of rhythm and melodies sung and played by the Langas and Manganiars are part of the eternal
appeal of this mysterious and wondrous land.
The soulful, full throated voices of these two music communities have filled the cool air of the desert night
for centuries in a tradition that reflects all aspects of Rajasthani life. Songs for every occasion, mood and
moment; stories of legendary battles, heroes and lovers engender a spirit of identity, expressed through.
music that provides relief from the inhospitable land of heat and dust storms.
THE‘SINDHI SARANGI:- used by the Langas, is made up of four main wires, with more than twenty
vibrating sympathetic strings which help to create its distinctive haunting tones. The bowing of these
instruments is a skilful exercise, often supported by the sound of the 'ghungroos' or ankle bells that are
tied to the bow to make the beat more prominent.
KHARTAAL:- made by the words Khar and Taal. Khar means hand and Taal means Rhythm. Rhythm of
Hands. Khartaal produces melodious musical sounds with the special movements of the hands. Khartaal is
a kind of castanets, made of teak wood, and the artistes hold them in both hands and perform with
tremendous ease. When the Manganiyar artist plays Khartaal, it evokes a delightful combination of rhythm
and the musical notes.
MUSIC
THE DHOLAK:- is a classical North Indian, Pakisthani and Nepalese hand drum. A dholak
may have traditional lacing or turnbuckle tuning. The dholak has a simple membrane and a
handle on the right hand side. The left hand membrane has a special coating on the inner
surface. This coating is a mixture of tar, clay and sand (dholak masala) which lowers the
pitch and provides a well defined tone. The wood used for the membrane is usually made of
teak wood, also known as "sheesham" wood. The process of hollowing out the drum is the
determination of the sound and quality of the dholak A dholak has 2 heads a small part for
the high pitch, and the large part is for the low pitch and it's pitched depending on size and
tuning sounding like a bongo in playing mode.
KAMAYCHA:-Kamaycha is the most significant instrument of Manganiyar community.
Khamaycha is made up of mango wood. The big, round, hollow part on one end of it is
covered with goat skin. This instrument has 17 strings out of which three special strings
are made from goat's intestine and the rest if the 14 strings are made up of steel. When
they touch those three special strings with their special bow made from horse's hair, it
produces some stirring music.

FASCINATING RAJASTHANI FOLK DANCES
The people of Rajasthan know the real art of living life to the fullest with
total enjoyment in spite of hard weather conditions and rough terrain. The
Fascinating Rajasthan Dances reflect the culture, geography, customs and
nature of the people of Rajasthan. Each region of Rajasthan has its own
folk dance forms. The Fascinating Rajasthan Dances are vibrant and
dynamic with graceful body movement. The colorful costumes of the
dances combined with lively folk music transform the harsh barren land
into a myriad hues of color.
Following are the various forms of Fascinating Rajasthan Dances:BHAVAI:- is one of the most dramatic dance forms of Rajasthan. The
veiled women dancers balances up to seven or nine brass pitchers over
their head as they dance elegantly, swiveling and swaying with the soles of
their feet settled on the top of a glass or on the edge of the sword.
CHARI DANCE:- is a dance form with effortless hand and foot movements
while balancing brass pots kept on the heads of the dancers. Often the
dancers keep ignited cottonseed on the brass pot to provide a special
effect to the dance.
GAIR DANCE:-Gair is performed both by men and
women. The men wear long, pleated tunic that open out
into full-length skirts. The dancers move is first in
clockwise then anti clockwise directions beating their
sticks to create the rhythm when they turn. This dance
has originated from a Bhill dance and is performed at
the time of Holi. There are two versions of this dance,
one is the Dandi Gair of the Marwar region and the
other is the Geendad of the Shekhawati region.
KACHHI GHODI:-Kachhi Ghodi has originated in the
Shekhawati region. It is performed for the entertainment
of the bridegroom's party. Dancers wear elaborate
costumes giving the effect as if riding on dummy horse.
The dance has mock fights, swinging of swords and
elegant body movement to the music of flutes and
drums.
FASCINATING RAJASTHANI FOLK DANCES
KALBELIYA DANCE:-Kalbeliya is one of the sensuous dance forms
of Rajasthan. It is performed by the Kalbeliyas, the snake charmers
community. The dancers wear long, black skirt decorated with sliver
ribbons. They spin in circles with great flexibility and the pace
increases with the increase in beats.
TERAHTAALI DANCE:-Terahtaali a devotional dance form
performed by the Kamad community in honor of their folk hero Baba
Ramdev. The women sit on the floor before his image. Thirteen
cymbals are tied to various parts of their body, which they strike
with the ones they hold in their hand. Their hands perform various
dance movements while striking the cymbals. They sometimes also
balance pots on their hands and hold a sword in their mouth.
FASCINATING RAJASTHANI FOLK DANCES
GHOOMAR DANCE:-Ghoomar Dance is basically a
community dance for women and performed on. auspicious
occasions. Derived from the word ghoomna, piroutte, this is a
very simple dance where the ladies move gently, gracefully in
circles.
KATHPUTALI:-Kathputli: Puppet plays based on popular
legends are performed by skilled puppeteers. Displaying his
skill in making the puppets act and dance, the puppeteer is
accompanied by a woman, usually his wife, who plays the
dholak, or drum and sings the ballad.
FASCINATING RAJASTHANI FOLK DANCES
 FIRE DANCE:-Fire Dance: The Jasnathis of Bikaner and Chum
are renowned for their tantric powers and this dance is in
keeping with their lifestyle. A large ground is prepared with live
wood and charcoal where the Jasnathi men and boys jump on
to the fire to the accompaniment of drum beats. The music
gradually rises in tempo and reaches a crescendo, the dancers
seem to be in a trance like state. Drum Dance: This is a
professional dance-form from Jalore. Five men with huge drums
round their necks, some with huge cymbals accompany a
dancer who holds a naked sword in his mouth and performs
vigorously by twirling three painted sticks.

 Belonging to the Muslim faith, but supported by the patrons, belong to the
Rajput desert clans, the Manganiyars sing the praises both of the great Sufi
saints and of the god Krishna. These splendid virtuoso musicians combine the
popular mystical and secular traditions of the desert with those of the courts of
the maharajas.
From childhood the music is heard and imbibed along with their mother's
milk. The music is an indispensable component of functions such as weddings,
engagements, and births. There is an uncountable number of songs for such
occasions. There are also many songs associated with planting and harvesting.
In these activities the villagers routinely sing of their hopes, fears and
aspirations.
Nowadays the musical performances of the Manganiyars ranging from
traditional village settings to the biggest stages of the world, are in high
demand not only because of their unique voices and instruments but non the
less because they move the audience form greatest, deepest joy to tears of
happiness.
