Historical development of tourism and travel, early travels and travel motivators, sub segments and subsystems of tourism industry, and the tourist business and the types of tourism establishments are analyzed in detail. The course emphasizes tourism as a system and develops its general interrelated and interdependent elements. The tourism development within the system, the organization, coordination and distribution systems are also examined. Introductory level information about the general development of tourism industry in the whole world and its structure are covered in this course. THMN 103 Professional English for Tourism – I 3 (3,0) The English language course introduces strategies of essay writing on various subjects and topics, including essays of analyzing, defining, contrasting and comparing. Besides, the course aims to develop students’ grammatical competence and verbal skills in English Language. THMN 105 Food and Beverage Services Management 5 (2,2) The course covers; basics of the food and beverage industry, effective management techniques on different types of operations ranging from coffee shops to room service, banquettes and restaurants, menu planning and analysis in food and beverage operations. The important aspects like a brief history of lodging industry, size and scope of the hospitality industry, factors influencing hotel development, hotel classifications, hotel industry investments and financing, independent and chain hotel operations are also reviewed. THMN 207 International Travel Destinations 4 (3, 0) This course examines the development of the touristic areas of major travel destinations and attractions travelers are journeying to and developments taking place on a worldwide basis. It provides the students a framework for continuous study of world tourism geography. After the introduction of travel industry and overview of the world, the course gives knowledge on major physical features, regions, and countries of each of the inhabited continents. THMN 203 Product Management and Diversification in Tourism 4 (3, 0) Characteristics of tourist product and reasons for tourist product management and diversification will be studied. Major types of tourism product and its diversification in terms of tourism industry (health tourism, nature based tourism, religion tourism, eco-tourism etc.) will be the main objective of the course. Types of destinations and development phases of destinations in relation to diversification will be observed. TURK 011 Turkish – I 1 (2, 0) The purpose of this course is to teach the students the fundamental characteristics of the Turkish language, linguistics and grammar. Over the course by using some stories, novels and poems of Turkish writers, the use of Turkish as a literary language will be illustrated. Additionally, the relationship between the Turkish language and culture, and the significance of language in expressing and expending culture will be illustrated with various examples. HIST 011 Atatürk’s Principles & History of Turkish Revolution – I 1 (2, 0) The reasons and forms of New Turkish Republic from Ottoman Empire, the revolutions related to New Republic, the reasons that led Turkish Revolution and research of the important stages of Independence War, baseline of Turkish Republic Government and scientific interpretation of the basic principles in Constitution are examined in the course. It contains three basic parts. First part is about gaining a perspective on selection and procurement. Second part is about principles of selection and procurement. The last part deals with selection and procurement of items like fresh produce, processed produce and other grocery items, dairy products, eggs, poultry, fish, meat, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, nonfood expense items, service, furniture, fixture and equipment. Concepts of purchasing and supplies management, models of purchasing and supply analysis for hotel and restaurant business. Case studies in related areas are performed by the students. THMN 355 Economics of Tourism Sectors 4 (3, 0) This course covers economics of basic tourism sectors, like hotel economics, hotel revenues and basic costs, kinds of hotels, hotel room rates, economic analysis of hotel operations and future trends, restaurant economics; fast-food restaurants, other type of restaurants, economic measures in restaurant operations, airline economics; airline pricing, forecasting air demand, economic future of airlines and cruise line economics, travel agency economics, theme park economics, camping ground economics and rail travel economics are also rviewed. THMN 357 Destination Management and Marketing 4 (3, 0) This course examines traditional disciplines, as well as new marketing approaches and tools to build a truly integrated marketing campaign for a destination. This course also studies destination management which includes land use planning, business permits and zoning controls, environmental and other regulations, business association initiatives, and a host of other techniques to shape the development and daily operation of tourismrelated activities. THMN 361 Guiding Services in Tourism 3 (3, 0) This course is designed for students to plan careers in tour guiding or tour operations. Topics include; tour operations, components of a tour management positions, characteristics of a professional tour guide, the psychology of tour management and internal communications, regional and Anatolian tours. THMN 367 Sport Tourism 5 (3, 0) This course is designed to examine the increasing volume of sport-related travel and tourism worldwide. The study of sport tourism reveals the vast number of specialized markets to explore in this area. A frequently used variety of sport tourism are travel to play sports (active sport tourism), travel to watch sports (event sport tourism), and travel to visit or show respect famous sport related attractions. THMN 356 Tourism Geography of Turkey 4 (3, 0) The course discusses tourism related demographics and regional allocation of tourism activities in Turkey with an emphasis on natural, historical and archeological attractions along with their characteristics as a tourism product. Development of the tourism areas of major travel destinations and attractions; worldwide tourism traffic and geography. Discussions on importance provided by geographic position of Turkey and case studies. THMN 358 Quality Management in Services Sector 5 (3, 0) This course deals with the basic principles, guidelines and management of total quality applications in the hospitality and travel industry. It also contains the steps, cultural and organizational changes the tourism establishment needs to adapt and important considerations in order to apply total quality management. The characteristics and the differences of total quality management, especially in service establishments, will be emphasized with examples, which are currently in use. Quality management pertaining to the hospitality and services sector, organizational restructuring process, means of setting and implementing quality goals team work, quality improvement in hospitality. THMN 360 Meeting and Congress Industry 5 (3, 0) This course deals with the basics and principles of convention management. The success factors, the important issues to consider and the trends in meeting industry are analyzed. Essentials of meeting development establishing objectives, controlling budgets, programming the agenda, determination of place and site, planning food and beverage, developing the meeting plan and evaluation are studied in detail. THMN 362 Computerized Reservation Systems 5 (3, 0) This course introduces the basic airline rules and regulations, geography and codes, reservation terms and sequences, domestic and international ticketing by using CRS. Studies IATA traffic conference areas. Studies fares, all kinds of special discount fares, mileage/kilometer calculation, and excess mileage/kilometer routing, refunding and reissuing a ticket. Studies the Computerized Reservation System (Apollo, Sabre, Galileo, etc.) which are used worldwide and their characteristics and the areas of usage of those systems. THMN 364 International Culinary Cultures and Food Design 5 (2, 2) This course examines the geographic, historical, cultural, religious, and economic influences that shape food availability and consumption in various cultures and countries around the world, developes a broad understanding of cultural food patterns and fosters an appreciation for various regions and cultural uniqueness of the food patterns in nations, gives examples of some recipes from the countries around the glob and gives students a sample of the food design and ingredients within a given region. THMN 368 Archaeology and Mythology 3 (3, 0) This course provides the detailed information on archaeological and historical sites of Turkey. It also includes a basis for cultural and heritage tourism management. In addition, it provides students with in depth knowledge on mythology. Especially Anatolia’s historical background, archaeological values and mythological characteristics will constitute the basic subjects of this course. The other regions in the world that show archaeological and mythological characteristics are studied. This course is also about the updated issues of Turkish tourism industry, the new trends and challenges, and new markets to appeal. The interesting topics on Turkish Tourism and latest developments of tourism industry are discussed and analyzed. The situation of Turkish Tourism on international platform, its advantages and disadvantages, the effects of the developments in regional competition to Turkish Tourism will be explained.
