SAP Application Benchmark Performance Standard
Since January 1st, 2009, the SAP SD Benchmark was changed to reflect the standards of today’s
installations. The following elements have changed:
• All benchmarks now must use a Unicode codepage
• The response time for the SD benchmark must now be less than one second (it was required to be
less than two seconds previously)
• Use of SAP Business Suite 7 (SAP ERP 6.0 Enhancement Package 5)
•Derived from SD Benchmark (Sales and Distribution)
•100 SAPS is 2000 fully processed order line items per hour

SAP on VMWare
Guidelines for a successful implementation
vSphere 5 - you can use up to 64 virtual CPU's. Due to enhancements in the scheduler, scaling up to 8 virtual
CPU's is very close to linear! Beyond that has not been tested for scalability with SAP.
Memory - Don't over commit memory. With VMware it is possible to assign more virtual memory to the VMs than
there is physical memory available in the host. This is not recommended with SAP. SAP processes allocate
memory permanently and do not release it even when the process is idle.
Filesystems and Disk - Follow SAP's rules for setting up file systems for your database installation. Distribute
database files over different disks. Separate log and db files. Use at least two separate VMFS (VMware
Filesystem) volumes to create the virtual disks.
CPU – When using "CPU Reservation“ ensure the reserved resources are available on other hosts when using
VMotion. Use CPU over committal carefully until steady state is reached and performance is closely monitored.
Sizing:
Enforce memory rules listed above.
Give at least 1GB of RAM for each VM to the Hypervisor.

All x86 platforms are not created equal
 We are building the most robust x86 solutions in the market place
 IBM spends $5B in Research & Development
– We have held the top number of patents for 16 years in a row
 We’ve leveraged our mainframe heritage to make systems based on the Intel
processors better than our competitors with
