The Role of the Teacher/Coach
By the end of this lesson you will:
• Identify the roles a coach/teachers must
carry out as part of their jobs
• Understand the various relationships
between coaches/teachers and performers.
• Be able to give examples of how coaches /
teachers need to react in certain situations and
how their decisions / actions effect performers.
List as many things that you can think of that
a sports coach is responsible for in their line
of work.
Think about your experiences from your
sports club or from any coaching courses you
have been on.

WHICH OF THESE DIFFER
FROM THE ROLE OF A
TEACHER?
Identify the various roles a coach might have
to adopt to help a performer who:
1. Has a new and painful injury
Motivator, friend,
scientist
2. Is homesick during a sports tour
Friend, motivator,
social worker
3. Is turning up late, wasting time and
appearing disinterested at training
Disciplinarian,
social worker,
4. Hopes to qualify for ‘world class potential’
funding
Administrator,
educator,
manager
The Instructor gives instructions often concerning
rules or safety – “don’t throw the javelin until I say”
or “don’t step out of the front of the discus circle”.
The lines of communication are 1 way so there’s
nothing to discuss
The trainer is interested in outcome. He or she will
give advice on technique, training or diet that directly
relates to improved performance. There is 2 way
communication
The educator is interested in and keen to develop the
whole person. There is a 2 way relationship and the
experience outweighs the outcome.
Case Study 1 (Teacher)
A P.E teacher is teaching a group of pupils football.
He is very keen to establish the spirit of the game
and sportsmanship as well as the rules. He
explains the consequences of breaking the rules
and cheating in the sport and why it is undesirable.
The coach has explained that all pupils who’s
behaviour on the pitch is unacceptable will
be dropped from the team and punished
accordingly.
• What would you class as ‘unacceptable’ behaviour in
football (or any team game)
• During the next match your team is 1-0 up with 1
minute to play in an important cup semi final.
• You hear the captain instructing his team to waste
time by kicking the ball as far away as possible and
slowing play down.
1.
Having explained about desirable behaviour
on the pitch. What would you say to your team after
the match about this incident?
2.
Having explained the punishment for poor
behaviour, what would you say if one of the players
claimed to have seen you, the P.E teacher playing
a club game on a Saturday afternoon, where you
were sent off for a deliberate foul?
Case Study 2 (Coach)
•The coach of a mixed hockey squad is preparing her
team for a major championship game. Together with
two selectors, the coach watches a practice game and
decides that the captain is so out of form that she will
have to be dropped for the all important game. The
captain is recovering from injury but has also suffered
the anguish of a relative involved in a car crash. The
members of the team have loyalties to their captain
and their coach but also desire to win the
championship game.
What would you
do?
•
Set up a role play situation
•
When you have decided whether the captain
should play or not, discuss the consequences to
the coach and the team if:
a) The game is won, either without the captain or
with the captain.
b) The game is lost either with the captain or
without the captain.
Coaches have many choices in
the way they behave but by
thinking through the
consequences, their judgement
can completely change the
process and the
product of any
sporting
situation.
• Has a similar situation ever occurred with your
teacher/coach?
•Take 1 of the roles of the coach and explain how
you would act given this problem with the
captain
Exam Question
Use a swimming, athletics or gymnastics situation
to explain when a coach might adopt the role of an
instructor, a trainer and an educator. (3)
