Briefly, Year One projects include:











the development of a CEU for AIDS/HIV biennial licensing for cosmetologist
professionals in the State of Florida. An opportunity to produce revenue for the college
by offering this course statewide. The participants needed to figure out how to build the
online program and have it approved/used by DSC.
the development of an EMT Professional Development Series for local EMTs. The
program existed prior to QuESST, but the participant needed to determine how best to
deliver and market the course to EMTs as a free program.
the practice and assessment of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction to improve
student performance on the college campus. The participant wanted to implement
mindfulness based practices in her ENC1101 classes for eight weeks, alongside the
development of further exercises and tools for assessment.
the creation of an online lab component for Microbiology. The participant came aboard
wanting to design online videos to incorporate into his microbiology labs.
the revamp of Nursing 101 - Best Teaching Practices. The participants wanted to study
how they could incorporate active-learning strategies in their introductory nursing
program courses.
“The Museum Classroom.” The participant wanted to make the classroom environment a
Humanities experience, as well as an educational tool, to better inspire, educate, and
motivate students.
the development of a program to academically and institutionally support the
homeless student population at DSC. In this first year, the participant wanted to assess
the needs and concerns of DSC students who are homeless.
a workshop to train and educate elementary, middle, and high school history
teachers. The participant connected with Flagler and Volusia County Schools to design
professional development sessions focused on teaching specific historical events,
specifically lessons in the K-12 classroom.
a weather balloon for meteorological research and classroom study. The participant
aimed to develop and send up a weather balloon to record data and videotape the
experience for future implementation in classroom pedagogy.
videos that flip classrooms – in math, science, and the arts. A group of participants
wanted to try creating videos as instructional resources for the students to watch before
they come to class, as well as tools to enhance classroom learning.
the development of a scholarly article that explains Jack the Ripper’s influence on the
work of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The participant wanted to work throughout the
term toward an academic article for submission to a Victorian studies publication.
