US History Course Syllabus: 1877 to Present Instructor: Ms. Harrell Room #: 235 Period: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 Email: letrecia.harrell@wylieisd.net Phone: 972.429.3100 ext. 5235 Conference Time: 2:35 to 3:25pm (7th) In this class, students will be learning about history from 1877 to our most recent history. Students will be using Chromebooks in class to facilitate and organize learning. They will be working with primary and secondary resources to gain a greater knowledge of our past. They will be participating in individual as well as group assignments. Students will have periodic reading assignments to expand their knowledge and writing assignments and journaling to exhibit what they have learned. Occasionally, students will be given quizzes over their reading or what we discussed the day/week before. Students will be given a test after each unit to check for understanding. Nine Weeks Grade Breakdown Daily Grades (homework, quizzes, class work) Major Grades (tests, projects, papers) 40% 60% Late Work Policy/ Absences It is important for students to be responsible for deadlines in class as well as to be present every day to avoid falling behind in course work. When a student does not make the deadline for an assignment, they have ONE day to turn in the assignment which will incur a 30 point deduction (70 max). (District Policy) Please turn work in on time. When a student is absent from class, they will receive an extension equal to the amount of days they were absent. For example, if they miss 3 days of class, they will have 3 days from the day they return to finish their assignments. This does not apply to long term assignments. Students will not receive an extension on taking the test if you miss review day. No exceptions! Redo’s/ Retakes of Assignments and Tests You can redo an assignment or test if you make less than a 70. The maximum grade to be received is a 70 (If you pass the test/ if you redo the assignment at 100%....it is still graded) This does not apply to zeros. You have 3 days to redo or retake from the day the grade is posted in the gradebook/ grade notification. To retake an exam, you should complete remediation in a tutorial before the test can be retaken (in the 3 day window) Supplies for Class: Folder for paper assignments (should be minimal) Headphones or ear buds (will need to have with you in class) Paper or a spiral to keep notes on Tardies: Tardiness will be handled by the office. If you are late, you must report to Room 216 and receive a pass before you will be admitted to class. (See Student Handbook.) Excessive tardies can lead to truancy. Academic Dishonesty: The rules are simple; if you cheat…you get a zero. If you plagiarize… you get a zero. Cheating includes sharing or copying answers with someone else on independent work and tests. Plagiarism is when you use ideas or phrases from sources without citing the information. You are stealing a person’s ideas by not giving them credit for their work. ALWAYS cite where you get your information. Class Expectations 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Be respectful with your words and actions Be in class on time and be prepared for class Cell phones and electronic devices are not to be used in class without permission.
