Current applications of biotechnology in animal science, environmental science, food science and plant science are emphasized. Basic concepts of genetics and microbiology are applied to the agriculture industry and its success in providing food and fiber for the world. Opportunities exist for students to conduct individual or team research experiments. Hands-on laboratories and current topic discussions provide students an understanding of careers in agriscience research. English language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course are apprenticeship, cooperative education, internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning, job shadowing, and supervised agricultural experience. FFA competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences. Course Goals: Demonstrate the major components of leadership involved in successful employment. Adapt public speaking techniques to address the audience and purpose of communication. Apply Robert’s Rules of Order to conduct business meetings of biotechnology organizations. Design a school-to-work employment plan based upon career objectives. Develop a financial record system for use in the agriscience biotechnology industry. Use advanced laboratory techniques and procedures in agriscience research. Outline the development of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s). Examine the various methods of genetic manipulation in plant and animal cells. Discuss biological processes in plant science related to biotechnology. Use biotechnology protocol in horticulture and crop science research. Examine biological processes in animal science related to biotechnology. Perform biotechnology protocol related to animal science. Examine techniques and biological processes in food science related to biotechnology. Examine techniques and biological processes in environmental science related to biotechnology. Explain biotechnology concepts related to agrimedicine and “pharming”. Discuss ethical and practical issues surrounding biotechnology. Evaluation: All agriculture classes are made up of 3 components, FFA, SAE and Classroom instruction. Your grade will be based upon your participation in all three areas. FFA – 10% SAE – 15% Classroom o Classwork, journals, current events, quizzes and homework – 30% o Tests and projects – 35% o Hands on Labs – 10% This course is a state tested course. At the end of the semester you will be administered a state designed test that will evaluate your performance. If you pass this test, it will take the place of (you will be exempted from) the teacher made exam. Your semester exam will count ¼ (25%) of your total semester grade. You must pass the class, not just the exam in order to receive credit for the course. All assignments are to be completed on time and on your own. Late assignments will not be accepted except in the case of an absence. When absent, all assignments must be made up in a timely manner. You will have the number of days you are absent plus one to make up all assignments (for example, if you are absent 2 days you have 3 days in which to make up all work). All missing assignments due to absence will be entered into the gradebook as a 0 until they are completed. In the case of an absence, you should retrieve assignments from the makeup work folder in the classroom and also visit our website (http://PerquimansFFA.theaet.com) to obtain assignments, notes and other information.
