Parent Orientation 2012-13!

Arrival
 Student Arrival
 -The 1st bell rings at 8:10.
*Students may arrive on campus at 8:10. Any student that
arrives before that time will be sent to the cafeteria.
*Students may eat breakfast at school.
*Tardy Bell rings at 8:25
Dismissal
Student Dismissal:
*2:50 First Bell- Bus and Car Riders
*3:00 Second Bell- Walkers and Daycare
***If your child checks out of school early or checks in
late he or she will miss important curriculum that is
vital to his or her 1st grade learning in addition to
disrupting other students’ learning. New school policy
is : No checkouts after 2:15pm now.
Transportation
 Method of Dismissal Transportation Change
 -Must occur with a handwritten note to the office (no
emails this year)
-this is for safety reasons
-students will use their regular method of dismissal
without a note

Money
 Sending Money
 Always enclose in an envelope with the following written
on it:
*Child’s name
*Mrs. Woodham’s Class
*Purpose of Money (lunch money, book fair, etc)
*Student Notes
-Use the HERO Binder. Students are responsible for
placing the important notes from home in the pink
basket upon entering the classroom each morning.
Discipline System
 Green, Yellow, Red System…. SIMPLE!
-Students will get a warning before
landing on Yellow, then red will follow.
* You will be contacted (planner) if your child
lands on any color other than green during the
week.
Please sign the behavior note taped in their folders
and return the next day.
Daily
Schedule
• Located in Binders
• Lunch 10:56-11:21
-School lunch $2.45-payments can now be made online
from the www.schoolpayments.com website
-Parents are welcome to eat lunch with their child.
Students may NOT leave the cafeteria during lunch.
Parents are not allowed to bring food to other
students besides their own child for lunch.
 Please sign in at the office. Get a visitor pass, and
meet us at the lunchroom.
• Activity Block 1:00 – 1:50 (Music –Mon., Tues. - PE,
Wed- PE/Art, Thurs. - PE, Fri. – PE/Art)
-Students must wear closed toe shoes to P.E.
-Students must have a note if they are not to
participate in P.E. for the day
Math
• Daily Instruction
-Hands-on
-Instruction in a smaller group while others are in
Math Stations
-Accelerated math
 Assessments – Vocab Tests, Mid-Chapters, Chapters
• Think Central – important tool for practice
• Math Packets – Practice
Social Studies
 Studying Communities, geography, history,
civics/government
 New Social Studies Book with Workbook – will send
home pages before tests to be used for
studying for the tests
 Special Projects – given for grades in class work usually
a week process for each project (Native American
Tribes, Map Flipbook, etc)
Reading
 Small Group Instruction (4-5 students)
 Remaining Students participate in Daily 5 Stations.
Stations include: read to self, read to someone, listen
to reading, word work, work on writing
 Accelerated Reading
-Classroom time and reading at home (Students are
required to read books and tests by themselves)
 Texts/trade books

– Test on all weekly skills – Friday
Unit Tests
-every 5 weeks
County Cold Reads
-two every 9 weeks
Spelling/Grammar
 Spelling Tests will be given every Monday, unless
stated on the weekly note
 - Grammar Tests will be given on Mondays

Criteria for Retention
 2 out of the 3 must be in place to be retained
for Reading in 1st Grade:
1. *End of the year grade in reading is an F.
2. *Score on end of the year DEA reading test, - Level 1
3. Stanford 10 test score below 36%

100-90 A
89 – 80 B
79 – 70 C
69 – 60 D
59 and below F
Homework
 The homework each week:
-Study Spelling and vocab words
-Read AR books
-Complete unfinished class work
-Math Homework as it comes home
- Please check the HERO Binder daily for notes and
information.

 Please check often to get the most
up-to-date grades for your child
in each subject area.
Snacks
 There will be a small amount of time each day for a working
snack. If your child would like to have snack, it needs to be
in a plastic bag with his/her name on it. No drinks will be
needed, because we have a water fountain. They are
allowed to use the found at any time throughout the day.
 Birthday Treats can be sent in for your child’s birthday. We
will enjoy them at a special snack time at 2:30. (cupcakes,
brownies , cookies, etc – easy to pass out) Please don’t send
in balloons. If passing out party invitations, please have
one invitation per student.
Volunteers
 notarized form on file every year even if you think you
won’t need one
 8:10-9:00 - helping the students take AR test and then
working on clerical work
 If we have a lot of volunteers I may use a every other week
schedule – I will let you know when my schedule ready.

Family Involvement
 Party Sign Up sheets-Fall, Winter, Spring, End of Year
 Field Trips-must have a volunteer affidavit on file to
participate in ANY school activity
 Early Release: 1st Thursdays of the month. Dismissal
time will be 12:10pm

 Health Tech – give Medicine to health tech, no cough
drops in class, no medicine of any kind in class
