BOOK REPORT GUIDELINES AND RUBRIC
Your book report should be handwritten, and your writing must be neat and legible. All
paragraphs must be well-developed using correct grammar and spelling just as we have
been practicing. Remember to use punctuation and capitalization!
1. You must include a title page with the following information centered on the page by itself:
Your name, the date, title and author of book, and publishing information including copyright
date
Example:
I. Book Report
Your Name
Date
Title of Book
Author(s) of Book
Publishing Info Example:
Children’s Press, Orlando, FL, 2013
2. You must write one paragraph about each of the following sections. Use centered headers. It
is okay to have more than one section on the same page, but be sure to remember to center
your headers and leave some space between the sections. (except title page – must be alone)
II. Summary
III. Comparison
IV. Self-Reflection
V. Conclusion
II. Summary
Write a brief summary of the book. Write about the main idea of the book and what you think
was the author’s purpose for writing the book. What do you think the author wants the readers to
learn from the book? Remember to be brief, and give the overall main idea.
III. Comparison
Compare your life to the life of a character (or group of characters) from the book. What are the
differences? What are the similarities? You might choose to write about a day in the life of the
character as compared to a typical day for you. You should consider comparing things such as
families, friends, chores, hobbies, homes, cars, neighborhoods, etc. Just remember to write about
differences and similarities.
IV. Self-Reflection
Write about a scene or event from the book and describe what was happening and how this made
you feel. I want to be able to see the image of what you are writing about as I am reading your
report. You may choose to write about a scene or event that was sad or made you angry; or one
that was funny or made you happy; or that brought up any other emotion in you. Remember to
use details and descriptive writing.
V. Conclusion
In a paragraph answer the following questions: Did you enjoy the book? Why or why not?
Would you recommend that I use this book again for a unit on the Great Depression? Why or
why not? Be specific and tell me why you did or did not enjoy the book, and also be specific
about why you would or would not recommend the book to be used with this unit for another
class. Tell me what you liked or did not like about the book, and tell me whether or not you
learned anything about the Great Depression from this book. Remember to use supporting details
in your writing.
