Sheng Kung Sisters in Taiwan for 60 Years
Arrival in Taipei Songshan Airport from Shanghai on
11/15/1948

Blessed Imelda High School
On November 23rd 1948,
the 32 Sisters began
their experience in
Taipai as one
Community living in
a classroom.
Taipei to Kaohsiung
The 10 hour train journey
to their first home in Kaohsiung.
Meeting with Msgr. Arregui, OP,
Apostolic Prefect of Formosa
SMIC Formation House was established in Kaohsiung in 1951
•
The first 7 postulants entered in
December 1951. Sr. Domitilla Harmann
was the postulant director.
•
On May 31st 1953, the first group became
novices. Sr. Demitria Brectung and
Sr. Editha were the directors for
the first year and second year novitiate
.

These were the first group of Sisters to
make Profession of Vows
Tainan Community Established
• The Region of Holy Name of Jesus moved to Tainan from Kaohsiung. The
postulants Sr. Gratia, Sr. Martina, and 3 other sisters moved to Tainan
community from Wufu.
• May 1967 The formation house was moved from Kaohsiung to Tainan
with Sr. Corona Chung named as novice director .
Pastoral Development in the Parish
at the Wufu Community
In March 1949, the Sisters started an
apostolic mission in the Cathedral parish.
They offered:
Faith Formation Class of Children
Altar Boy training
Preparation for First Holy Communion
Other Pastoral Works by Wufu Community
The First Branch of Legion of Mary --Rosary Society Branch was established.
The leader was Sr. Corona Chung and the
vicar was Sr. Antonila
The Rosary Credit Union is started in 1970.
1950-
80 more children receive their
First Holy Communion.
Sr. Reginalda Chen begins the
Rosary Credit Union.

Community
Lo-Jen Hospital Services
Brief History of Sheng Kung Hospital
The Lo Jen Hospital services were moved to the
current address of Jienko Road, Kaohsiung, taking
on an expansion of sections and medical units,
with additional equipment thus becoming a general
hospital and renamed in 1978 Sheng Kung
Catholic Hospital.

home healthy care in 1978
elderly day care in 1984.
long term care for the elderly in 1985
hospice care in 1985, hospital and/or
help at home.
Sheng Kung Hospital Provides Community Services
• 1988, the Southern Information Center was started to provide services for home care for the elderly
and those with disabilities;

1989, Community Health Center was established.
1990, Mother–Child clinic was provided.
1992, provided service for people who are diabetics and was recognized as The First Class Clinic.
1992, became a Community Training Hospital.
1993, developed community medical groups, to assist family doctors to integrate the plan.
1993, Day Care Center for those with mental illness was funded.
1995, adopted community medical services and training for pediatrics.

Ms. Rosa Fang served at Lo-Jen Kindergarten in August 1959. Later as Sister Rosa Fang in 1963, she
became director of the Kindergarten.
The first Kaohsiung kindergarten bus was bought in 1965.
Montessori Method was adopted since 1984 till now.
Between 1981-1983: Sr. Johanna Wu was participated Montessori Teachers Training in Japan and
upon return to Taiwan to begin a training program.
Sr. Johanna Wu took over from Sr. Rosa Fang who was retired in 2002.
Hsinying Community, Kindergarten, Clinic
Invited by Franciscan Parish Priest, the Sisters
started to community lives, purchased land, and
built Hsinying Community and clinic which was
inaugurated on May 23rd 1955.
Sr. Hiltruedis Ehle took care of Kindergarten.
Music class was started in 1957 while
Sr. Seraphia Bruggemann was its administrator.
Sr. Ildifonse Meier managed the Lo-Jen Clinic. It
ceased operations in 1973.

Hsinying Community & Sisters
Tsoying Community (1957-1984)
In 1952, the Sisters were invited by Fr. Emilio
Calderon, of St. Teresa Church of Tsoying to
teach religious class.
• The Community was inaugurated in 1956
• Its ministries include:
– Established Legion of Eucharist
– Credit Union Association
– Introduction of Natural Birth Control
– Legion of Mary
– Association of Sacred Heart of Jesus

- Yu-Jen Kindergarten (1954-1974)
- Lo-Jen clinic was started in 1957.
Tsoying Community
and Clinic
Vocation from Holy Spirit Girl’s Missionary School
• Rev. Fr. Aloyis Tauch, SVD
relocated the Holy Spirit Girl’s
Missionary School to Kaohsiung’s
Wufu Community to be led by the
Missionary Sisters in 1957.
The school functioned for 22
years until 1979.
Fengshan Community
In 1952, invited by Fr. Aoapito Villalba, OP, Sr. Beata Li was a pioneer in
evangelization to the Fengshan Community. She traveled from Kaohsiung to
Fengshan every Thursday and Sunday for two years.
Work expanded with the construction of the convent and kindergarten were
completed on 03/03/1963.

Ministerial Development of Fengshan Community
Sr. Liliosa Kang was the first principle of Lo-Jen
Kindergarten (1954-2000).
Sr. Felitia Lewandowski was in charge of Sewing
Class (1964-1971)/ Women Dormitory (19711973) for the native young ladies.
Foreign language classes were taught in English,
German and French by Sr. Johannes Berchmanns
and Sr. Faustina Nordick.
Taina Matou Community

November 1959, Fr. Fribert Marx OFM invited the Sisters to take over the priest’s
small clinic . Sr. Ildefons and Sr. Theresia Wang were assigned to administer the
services. Sr. Anna Han was given charge of the kindergarten.
The Sisters moved into new clinic on April 30th 1962. The clinic was
expanded and ready by September 25th 1968 and renamed Motou Lo-Jen
Hospital.
These services were provided until December 31st 1984.

The Tahsi Community
• Fr. Civilo Meacie OFM invited the Sisters to
open the clinic and do evangelization in 1960.
• Tahsi Community and Le Ren Hospital were
built in 1963. The first group of Sisters:
Sr. Edeltrudis Weskamp was superior and in
charge of pharmacy, Sr. Hilda a medical
doctor was in charge of the Hospital, with Sr.
Theresia Wang assisting in the medical work.

Sr. Pacis took over the hospital from Sr. Hilda and Sr. Edeltrudis Weskamp. The
hospital became Lo-Jen clinic in 1967.
Because Dr. Zhu retired with cancer, it was difficult to hire a doctor, thus the LoJen clinic was closed.
English classes were taught by Sr. Helen. After celebrating her 80th birthday, she
returned to the USA. Sr. Bonita Chang returned from the Philippines and continued
to teach English until she was assigned to Matou.
Hsichih Community(1963~1967)
Fr. Martin Govissern OFM invited the
Sisters to assist Fr. Seraficos OFM for
evangelization, clinic, and kindergarten in
the beginning of 1960.
•Sr. Pacis, Sr. Virgnia Chu, Sr. Reginalda Chen,
Sr. Wendelina joined the ministries in August1963.

Tainan Convent was Built in 1964
• In 1962, Generalate approved that Sheng
Kung Girls High School begun in China
would be continued in Tainan; Sr. Gervasia
Schrenkenbrock and Sr. Emmanuel Fu were
in charge of rebuilding school. 。
The first community of Sisters at the school
were Sr. Gervasia. Sr. Emmanuel Fu Sr.
Amata Wang, Sr. Corona Chung, and Sr.
Francita Cheng. These five Sisters lived in
along Railway Cottages.

Tainan Community was built in 1964
Jing Cheng Building was completed in 1966,
the Sisters moved to the 2nd floor. Later,
Sr. Mathea, Sr. Bonita Chang, Sr. Liliosa
Kang, and Sr. Adalberta Kaschura
joined the community and worked in the
school.
• Upon completion of the Convent construction
the Sisters moved into the building.
Ministry Development in Tainan
•
When the East part of the Jing Cheng School
building was finished, 4 classes of Junior High
girls were enrolled in August 1964.
During this time, Sr. Corona Chung, Sr. Agnes
Lee, Sr. Veronica Lee, and Sr. Jane Abeln joined in
school academic team.
– Senior High School was approved in 1967.
– Sr. Corona Chung became the principal after
Sr. Emmanuel Fu retired in February 1971.

Ministerial Development in Bacolod Philippines
• In June 1967, Generalate assigned Sr. Bonita
Chang, Sr. Mathea, Sr. Leatitia Lin, Sr. Veronica
Lee, and Sr. Clementia Su to serve at St. John’s
Institute, then these Sisters were assigned to study
at St. Tomas University, the Philippines..
The first group of Sisters arrived in Bacolod Air Port.
Priests and teachers welcomed the Sisters at the Air Port.
• In 1967, Sr. Maria Regina Bacolod was assigned
to ministry in the Philippines where the Sisters
remained until the closing of the mission in 1972.
Ministry Development -1976 Lo-Jen Social Service Center
• Provided Day Care service for the infants, it was stopped
after a year. Provided Day Care service for toddlers
which was combined to Lo-Jen Kindergarten in1978.
Young Catholic Association.
Sr. Paulina Tsai took over the Social Service from
Sr. Amata Wang and continued to open Young Catholic
Association, Family Service Department, and
Self-Growth Group in 1982.
Sr. Clare Hung became the director of Social Service
Center.
1993
St. Francis Formation House was established in 1993.
1997
St. Clare Convent was founded in 1997.
1999
The Sisters took over Sacred Heart School of Tacloban in 1999.
The Sheng Kung School Association was founded
in December 2002.
1963
From a Region to a Province Status
January 23, 1963: Foundation of Catholic
Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Immaculate
Conception was legalized
March 5, 1973 Taiwan Region became Taiwan
Province . There were 76 Sisters (included 13
German Sisters) and 7 communities.
