He is now responsible for the planning and preparation of Full Contact Juggling for 2 Access to HE groups. Alex is very well prepared & has very good knowledge of the subject he is teaching. However, sometimes it seems as if the knowledge does not extend past the lesson & he cannot always answer questions that students ask. Alex has done a very effective job of relating juggling to numeracy activities and use of correct terminology – and looked at career pathways such as http://invisiblecircus.co.uk/ Very sensitive, inclusive sessions have been devised and delivered. Some exciting session have included sharing cultural experiences, international circus and clowning, historically & contemporarily. Within his role he is also assessor and has engaged in moderation processes – some excellent formative feedback was offered. The improvements this term have meant that Alex is now teaching independently to good effect. Based on the evaluation above, agree areas for development that the trainee can take into their future teaching careers Particular Strengths based on your evaluations 1. 2. 3. 4. Alex is a very friendly & approachable person; he has been a source of support to many students on the course. Alex has an excellent understanding of the college systems & processes & the role of the teacher. Alex is very organised & prepared for every lesson: he always has a lesson plan & resources, and understands the requirements and role of a teacher. He is helpful & contentious, and is completely focused on what is best for the students. He goes above & beyond to ensure that the students are supported. 5. Pace & delivery of the lesson is appropriate to the learners. Areas for Development based on your evaluations 1. Continue to work to improve presence in the classroom by developing confidence by building on current strategies and ways to manage behaviour. 2. Develop resources that do not focus on the use of PowerPoint so much. 3. Look for those opportunities to facilitate learning rather than relying on teacher-focused methods. Additional Comments Alex is a highly organised trainee; he prepares his lessons exceptionally well with reference to all key initiatives & polices needing to be embedded. Although a key strength, Alex at times sticks too rigidly to the plan & does not use opportunities to develop learners as they arise within the lesson, for example developing discussion into debates. At times PowerPoints contain too much detail & opportunities for Alex to facilitate learning have been missed (e.g. providing definitions instead of students defining the terms themselves). Alex does, however, have a good understanding of the applications of Full Contact Juggling and is good at providing examples to learners from popular culture to enable them to have a reference point (although these could also be extended to the wider social context). He also demonstrates a real passion for the subject & this transfers well into the lessons. Alex has improved his classroom management techniques although some learners remain challenging. Alex needs to ensure that he does not appear to be unsettled when addressing inappropriate behaviour from his learners in the classroom; this will improve with experience and is not a serious issue in Alex’s classes, anyway. Alex has continued to be a valuable source of support to me & the Full Contact Juggling team this year. He is helpful & polite & always willing to participate in the various roles of the teacher. He has grown in confidence & already progressed very well in his teaching ability. He is an asset to the students who value his supportive nature. In Alex’s first year of teaching he needs to become even more independent & develop in confidence to reach the Grade 1 learning outcomes; this is something I believe Alex to be capable of. Overall, I’d say that Alex is a good teacher, and continuing to gain experience in behaviour management techniques and strategies will help to maintain this.
