Eager-to-Learn classes are multi-week, in-depth learning experiences. Students participate in weekly live chat sessions, respond to engaging message board questions and write
a weekly e-mail reflection. Instructors provide ongoing feedback to the students on the message board while students communicate with each other in an ongoing dialog.

Focus on Core Concepts
Join us as we recognize the interrelationship between physical,
social, emotional, mathematical, language and literacy development
in young children in this four hour course. Learn how early
experiences shape the development and our role in supporting
children. Strategies for early childhood providers are an integral part
of this course.
Parent Aware Core Curriculum
SIDS and Shaken Baby Syndrome
This course will cover the definitions as well as prevention strategies
for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Shaken Baby Syndrome. It
will also address the risk factors related to Shaken Baby Syndrome
and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, the means of reducing and
communicating with parents about reducing the risk factors. This
course meets the licensing requirements for SIDS and shaken baby
training.
Family Child Care Legal and Insurance Issues
This course will examine the basic skills of small business
management for individuals interested in operating a family child
care business. It will highlight the best practices that are unique to
the child care industry.
Participants who successfully complete this training will be able to
manage the risks of operating a family child care business, establish
rules of safety, establish rules to reduce custody disputes with
parents, define the Americans with Disabilities Act, identify
insurance coverage for family child care businesses, and define
business structures.

Authentic Observation
In this interactive course participants will be introduced to child
observation and the tools of objective observation. Participants will
discuss the rationale for child observation, will practice observation
techniques and will discuss ways in which to use observation
information to individualize care and learning environments.
Parent Aware Core Curriculum
Assessment: Gathering and Using Information
This training does not focus on a specific assessment tool but rather
provides background for choosing and using assessment tools to
inform practice. The training is intentionally structured with time
between sessions for practice and reflection. When programs have
already identified a particular assessment tool/system, trainers may
reference the particular assessment. However, this training is not
intended to promote or train participants to use one specific
assessment. This training is designed to demystify the process of
assessment so that participants will be able to employ a variety of
documentation strategies in order to gather information and then
use that information in ways that support learning.
Parent Aware Core Curriculum
Learning to Listen, Listening to Learn
Children’s listening habits/skills are good predictors of oral language
proficiency, reading and writing skills and later school success, but
good listening skills do not come naturally—they must be taught
and practiced. This course will help providers improve their own
listening skills and those of children by understanding the
components of listening and how to apply strategies. Children are
ready to learn to become good listeners!
SEEDS of Early Literacy Session 4: Language to Literacy; The “Big 5”
Literacy Skills
In this course students will recognize five specific emergent literacy
skills that are important for preschool children to develop in order
to be ready by kindergarten.
Overview of Curriculum
This session series focuses on early childhood curriculum and the
domains of development, elements of effective curriculum, and the
role of authentic assessment in gathering information about
children's development and in adapting curriculum to meet
children's needs.

Creating Cultural Connections in Child Care
Families and communities provide the foundations children need to
be successful. This course will at the resources and reflective skills
providers need to work successfully with diverse families. Methods
to find and promote the strengths of families as a way to promote
child development will also be discussed.
Parent Aware Core Curriculum
Introduction to Child Development
All children are born eager to explore their world and master their
development. Join us as we review the theories of child
development, the importance of developmentally appropriate
practice, the developmental milestones of the first five years of life,
including brain development and factors that can influence child
growth and development. We will examine the function and
importance of play in the lives of young children as well as highlight
how observation and assessment of children is important as early
childhood educators.
Parent Aware Core Curriculum
SEEDS of Early Literacy Session 5: Book and Print Awareness
In this course students will discuss the importance of daily reading
and look at ways to incorporate reading into their routines. They will
also look at ideas for supporting second language readers.
Learning About Nutrition Through Activities
This course will introduce ways to help children learn to eat more
fruits and vegetables. Topics will include increasing opportunities for
children to taste and eat fruits and vegetables, providing hands-on
experiences with fruits and vegetables, creating supportive
environments for healthy eating, positive role modeling, and
connecting child care or classroom activities with home
environment.
What Does Early Childhood Curriculum Look Like?
This course will focus on identifying what a curriculum is and how it
fits into your daily schedule. Opportunities to compare types of
curricula will be available. Participants will begin creating their own
curriculum plans based on the early learning standards.

Not by Chance: Quality in Practice for the Early Childhood
Indicators of Progress
This training is focused on the Early Childhood Indicators of
Progress, Minnesota’s Early Learning Standards. The ECIPs offer the
latest research on common developmental expectations for children
ages 3 to 5 and a framework for helping them get there. The Early
Childhood Indicators of Progress for Children Ages Birth-3 will be
incorporated into this training as they become available.
ABCs of Obesity
This course will present information about the prevalence of
childhood obesity, factors that influence obesity and the resulting
health effects. Participants will examine the role caregivers and
parents play in developing healthy lifestyles for children.
Participants will also explore comprehensive strategies to promote
healthy weight in children.
Inside the Child: Social and Emotional Development
In this course students will gain an understanding of healthy social
and emotional development. In addition they will examine
strategies for supporting children’s emotional development and
become familiar with the 9 temperament traits.
Wave Riders: Nurturing Boys for Emotional Health
This training provides tools for caregivers to connect with boys and
understand their emotional language, this workshop goes beyond
stereotypes and masculine myths to chart a course toward social
competence that benefits all children.
Encouraging Parental Involvement in Child Care
Child care brings great benefits to children, parents and providers.
This course will focus on methods for involving every parent while
helping to remove fear and uncertainty for providers.
The Nurtured Heart Approach - Transforming the Challenging Child

Introduction to Children with Special Needs
The incidence of varying disabilities and special needs continue to
increase and most child care providers will have the opportunity to
care for children with special needs. This workshop will review
some of the red flags for developmental concern including
challenging behavior, some of the diagnosis most commonly seen
such as autism and resources to suport inclusive care. The
workshop will also review the referral for screening process and the
resources in early intervention.
Parent Aware Approved Training
Promoting Health and Wellness: Supervising for Safety
This class takes health and wellness to a program-wide level by
introducing basic best practices for emergency preparedness, illness
and injury, and evacuation. The second session is an introduction to
the topic of supervision in the context of an early childhood setting.
Participants discuss the components of effective indoor and
outdoor supervision, as well as supervising while interacting.

Introduction to the High Scope Preschool Curriculum

Is Everybody Ready for Kindergarten? A Toolkit to Prepare
Families and Children
How do we know the children are ready for school? How do we
help families prepare their children for kindergarten? In this course,
Angèle Passe, the author of Is Everybody Ready for Kindergarten?

Spanish for Young Children
This course introduces participants to simple Spanish language
learning activities that can be incorporated into the daily curriculum
for young children. Learn how to pronounce beginning Spanish
words and how to create fun Spanish language learning with songs,
activities, games, cooking, and more. No Spanish background is
required to use this easy curriculum!
Why Math for Preschoolers?
"Why Math?" discusses how young children learn basic math
concepts and why it is important to them in their early childhood
years. Through discussion and readings, participants will get a
better view on how children discover mathematical concepts
through numbers, patterning, spatial awareness and reasoning. This
course is geared toward providers working with preschool and
school age children.
Why Don’t they Like Me: A Look at Bullying
What is Minnesota doing about bullying? Is it across the spectrum
to include all types of bullying? Come and find out more! We will
discuss the difference between harassment and bullying; examine
common views about bullying and the types of bullying as we look
at ways to talk to children about prevention and effective methods
for responding to the bullying behavior. Discussion on how bullying
can impact a child’s self-esteem and how we can use intervention
strategies is the key!

Children’s Development: What to Expect and When to be
Concerned
This course will provide an overview of the red flags for
developmental delays in young children, strategies for sharing your
developmental concerns with families. Students will receive useful
brochures describing typical child development and red flags for
atypical development and other resource information.
Childhood Stress in a Contemporary Society
Students will survey the language and history of stress and how it
has shaped our understanding of childhood stress. We will explore
the current sources of childhood stress and how to avoid them, why
children experience stress in unique ways—particularly in our busy,
media driven culture—and effective stress reduction techniques.
This course is of value to parents, teachers, caregivers and others
who care for children.

Social Media and Internet Policies for Early Childhood Businesses
The Internet and Social Media Policy Course is a five-week course
designed for Early Childhood Directors and owners to review and
discuss key policy and practice considerations related to use of the
internet and social media in the operation of their early childhood
businesses. Areas of communications and marketing will be
explored as well as potential strengths and challenges of
implementing these technology tools with staff and parents. (Please
note that as much useful information is available elsewhere
regarding use and best practices for children with technology and
media, that is not the focus of this course)
Positive Discipline
This course is geared toward providers caring for children from
birth through school age. It will cover the different types of
consequences for children. It will also address which consequences
are most appropriate in a child care setting and how the
consequences affect children’s future behavior.
Observation: Find the Function of Behavior
In this course we will examine temperament and development in
relation to children’s behavior. Join us in discovering how, through
observation, we can see the clues children give us to the purposes

Having the Difficult Conversations
Learn techniques for communicating effectively with colleagues,
parents and other partners in your workplace. Special emphasis will
be placed on how to handle the “difficult” conversations.
Let's Move! Child Care
This course will present information about the prevalence of
childhood obesity, factors that influence obesity, and the resulting
health effects. Participants will examine the role caregivers play in
developing healthy lifestyles for children. Participants will also
explore five comprehensive strategies of the Let’s Move Child Care
initiative to promote healthy weight in children: physical activity,
screen time, food, beverages and infant feeding.
