Mr. Ben Allen, WRFL, UK Media Advisor
Ben Allen is an Assistant Director in the Office of Student Involvement working with student media and primarily as advisor to
WRFL, UK’s student driven radio station. His background is in audio and video production, having worked at Kentucky
Educational Television from 2007-2011 and in his current role with UK Student Affairs for the last five years. He intends to
begin studying Chinese at UK in fall 2015 and looks forward to helping archive this delegation’s visit to China.
Dr. Jen Bartlett, UK Libraries
Jennifer A. Bartlett is the Head of Reference Services at the University of Kentucky Libraries, and has worked in public and
academic libraries since 1995. She earned a master’s in library science from Indiana University-Bloomington, a master’s in
English from Murray State University, and is currently a doctoral student in higher education in the UK College of Education.
Her research interests include reference services, library management, and the history of libraries in higher education.
Ms. Chen Gu, UK Confucius Institute [Facilitator]
Ms. Chen Gu is the Chinese culture event coordinator and Chinese language teacher of Confucius Institute at University of
Kentucky. Ms. Chen Gu earned her bachelor’s degree in Chinese Language and Literature from Fudan University and master’s
degree in Chinese Modern & Contemporary Literature from Fudan University. She has been a Chinese language teacher
teaching Chinese as a second language for 11 years at Shanghai University. This is her second year working in Confucius
Institute at University of Kentucky.
Ms. Ellie Holliday, College of Education
Ellie Holliday is assistant director of International School Partnerships and Coordinator of Student Organizations and Events
for the Office of Student Success within the College of Education. She assists with international initiatives in the College and
helps to advise international and education abroad students. She earned her bachelor’s degree in international studies from
the University of Kentucky and her master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Commerce from the Patterson School at
the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Jim Holsinger, College of Public Health
Dr. James W. Holsinger, Jr., M.D., Ph.D. currently serves as Charles T. Wethington Jr. Endowed Chair in the Health Sciences
and Director of Global Health Training and Research at the University of Kentucky College of Public Health. His faculty
appointments include Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health and Health Management and Policy in the College of
Public Health.
Dr. Patrick Lee Lucas, College of Design
Patrick Lee Lucas, Director, School of Interiors, University of Kentucky College of Design. An award-winning teacher, Lucas
leads seminars, teaches lecture courses, and facilitates studio interactions by engaging in community conversations and
encouraging students to think about the place of design in the world. He has led several education abroad experiences for
students connected to his research agenda about design and community. He serves as the coordinator for international
activities in the College of Design
Dr. Kamyar Cyrus “K.C.” Mahboub, PE, ASCE Fellow
Associate Dean for Outreach and External Partnerships
Lawson Professor of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering
Dr. Mahboub joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky in 1988 and in the intervening years has made a significant
contribution to his profession in the areas of teaching, research, and service. His primary research focus lies in the area of
the mechanistic characterization of construction materials. In addition to over sixty peer-reviewed publications, he has
published two chapters in a popular pavement design textbook and has developed three new civil engineering courses at UK.
Dr. Mahboub received his BSCE from The University of Texas at Austin, and MSCE and Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. He
is a registered professional engineer (PE) in Kentucky, and he is an ASCE Fellow.
Dr. Sam Matheny, College of Medicine
Samuel Matheny is the Assistant Provost for Global Health Initiatives for the University of Kentucky, and as such, coordinates
all of the international affiliations for the six health colleges, including Medicine, Dentistry, Health Sciences, Nursing,
Pharmacy, and Public Health. He is a Professor of Family/Community Medicine and Public Health. He has a particular
interest in health care systems, and his clinical focus in on primary care and HIV infection. He is a graduate of Emory
University (BA), the University of Kentucky (MD), and UCLA (MPH), and did post-graduate training at the University of
Southern California and the Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Katherine McCormick, Undergraduate Education (Service-Learning)
Dr. McCormick came to the University of Kentucky in 1998 and is a Professor in the College of Education’s Interdisciplinary
Early Childhood Education program. She holds the James W. & Diane V. Stuckett Endowed Professorship in Servicelearning. She is currently on special assignment to Undergraduate Education to advance civic engagement and servicelearning. Dr. McCormick earned bachelor’s and graduate degrees from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and her
Ph.D. from Auburn University in Early Childhood Special Education.
Dr. Jasmine McNealy, College of Communication & Information
Jasmine E. McNealy is an assistant professor in the Information Communication Technology program at the University of
Kentucky. Dr. McNealy earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, and her law degree and Ph.D. in mass
communication at the University of Florida. Her research focuses on law and policy as it relates to media, information, and
technology with an emphasis on privacy in social media. She teaches related courses.
Dr. Kathleen Montgomery, Patterson School of Diplomacy
Kathleen Montgomery is Director of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor in the Patterson School of Diplomacy and
International Commerce. She earned her B.A. from the College of William and Mary, M.S. in Agricultural Economics and Ph.D.
in Economics at the Pennsylvania State University with a focus on trade and development. Prior to arriving at the Patterson
School, she spent more than a decade working on development projects throughout Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.
Dr. Anthony Ogden, International Center [Facilitator]
Anthony C. Ogden is executive director of Education Abroad and Exchanges and an adjunct assistant professor in Educational
Policy and Evaluation Studies at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Ogden earned his bachelor’s degree from Berea College,
master’s degree in International and Intercultural Management at the SIT Graduate Institute, and his Ph.D. at The
Pennsylvania State University in Educational Theory and Policy with a dual title in Comparative and International Education.
Dr. Sue Roberts, College of Arts & Sciences
Sue Roberts is a Professor in the Department of Geography and is affiliated with the interdisciplinary Committee on Social
Theory and the International Studies program. Sue grew up in England, and got her BA at the University of Leicester. Her MA
and PhD are from Syracuse University. Sue’s research is in political and economic geography. She teaches at all levels of the
undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Sue has been a long-time supporter of internationalization at UK.
Dr. Rachel Shane, College of Fine Arts
Dr. Rachel Shane is the Program Director and an Assistant Professor of Arts Administration at the University of Kentucky. Dr.
Shane is responsible for overseeing two degree programs, the BA in Arts Administration and an online MA in Arts
Administration. Additionally, she teaches courses on marketing, financial management, fundraising, nonprofit management
and legal issues in the arts. She earned a Ph.D. in Cultural Policy and Arts Administration at The Ohio State University. She
also earned a Master of Science in Arts Administration from Drexel University, a Bachelor of Science in Theatre from Northern
Arizona University, and an A.A. degree from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Dr. Diane Snow, Undergraduate Education (Undergraduate Research, Honors)
Diane M. Snow, PhD is a professor of neuroscience in the Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center and the Department
of Anatomy and Neurobiology at The University of Kentucky (UK) College of Medicine. She also serves as the Interim Director
of the UK Honors Program, and as Director for the Office of Undergraduate Research. She earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience
from Case Western Reserve University, and joined the faculty at UK in 1996.
Dr. Sharon Stewart, College of Health Sciences
Sharon R. Stewart is the Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs in the College of Health Sciences and a Professor in
the Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders. As Associate Dean in a college that offers degrees, provides clinical
services, and conducts research across a variety of healthcare disciplines, Dr. Stewart is particular interested in identifying
and building interprofessional opportunities to improve healthcare education and research with the overall purpose of
improving patient care.
Ms. Yiyi Tang, International Center [Facilitator]
Yiyi Tang is the Financial Manager and Scholarship Coordinator of Education Abroad at the University of Kentucky. She holds
her bachelor’s degree in Finance from Zhejiang University, and master’s degree in Finance from Fudan University. She earned
her MBA degree in May 2013 from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to coming to the United States for her MBA degree,
she worked with Deloitte CPA Firm and Deloitte Consulting in Shanghai, China.
Mr. Thomas Teague, Gatton College of Business & Economics [Facilitator]
Thomas Teague is an academic advisor in the Gatton College of Business and Economics. Prior to transitioning to Gatton, he
spent 3+ years as an education abroad advisor here at UK. While at UKEA, Thomas liaised with the College of Arts & Sciences
and coordinated UKEA’s ongoing orientation programming. Thomas earned his bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State
University in French and his master’s degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in College Student Personnel
Dr. Kirsten Turner, College of Arts & Sciences
J. Kirsten Turner is chief of staff, chief financial officer, and assistant dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and an adjunct
assistant professor in Educational Policy and Evaluation Studies at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Turner earned her
bachelor’s degree from Hanover College, master’s degree at the University of Kentucky, and her Ph.D. at the University of
Virginia’s Curry School of Education in the Center for the Study of Higher Education. Her research interests deal with the
public and private benefits of higher education.
Dr. Scarlett Wesley, College of Agriculture, Food and Environment
Dr. Wesley is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Retailing and Tourism
Management in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Retailing and
Consumer Sciences from the University of Tennessee. Her research interests are in the areas of corporate social
responsibility and tourism retailing. She currently leads the international experience in merchandising, apparel and textiles
which studies abroad each spring semester.
