Standards for Students Standards for Teachers Technology Foundation Standards For Students 1. Basic operations and concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems. Students are proficient in the use of technology. 2. Social, ethical, and human issues Students understand the ethical, cultural, and societal issues related to technology. Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software. Attendance and grades can be tracked and updated on computers daily. Using programs such as Microsoft Excel gives teachers easy access to grades and attendance. Also grades can be easily determined with these programs. Attendance can be easily determined because it can be used throughout the year, and keeps a tally of students absences. Also when using these programs it is easy to print these spreadsheets out to send home to parents. How can technology be used to increase communication with parents? How can a technology rich classroom environment increase student motivation. Technology in the classroom is great for student motivation. It puts the world at their fingertips and whenever they want to know something they can just type it into a computer. Technology also makes learning fun and easy. Through presentations a teacher can add color and pictures to any lecture. Technology Rich Classroom (Con’t) Technology makes it easier for students and teachers to communicate outside the classroom. If a student is struggling with something they can send their teacher an email for a fast response. Technology also brings video and music into the classroom on a daily basis. Technology Meeting the Needs of ESOL Students… Talking Electronic Device- Helps by pronouncing challenging words SD900- Handwriting recognition, has real human voice & has an encyclopedic dictionary Special Needs Accommodations Children who are unable to speak effectively can use products like the LinkClassic or LinkPlus to type out their thoughts which are then translated into a voice for others to hear. Special Needs Accommodations “DynaVox”- Has pictures to help with language/speech impairment - Helps with students who have fine motor impairments “Lightwriter”- text-to-speech Dual Display Available with large keys Visual Impairment Accommodations Students with visual impairments may use keyboards and computers with large print. There are also basic keyboards that have keys in different colors. Software program translates text into Braille can print out with a Braille Printer Audio books available Hearing Impaired Accommodations There is also software like ZoomText that magnifies fonts and also uses friendly human voices to read the text out loud to the user. Another software called The iCommunicator 3.0 can translate text to sign language.
