Dennis Wang Professor Chocos ESL 100 8 March 9, 2015 Temporary Work and Income Should not define a Person A good job with high income can always make others jealous. Some people even lost self-confident because of their low income or worked in blue-collar. These are totally unnecessary. Does what you do and how much you make, define who you are? Although a paid job make it possible for people to eat better food, drive a good car. I believe that temporary work and income should not complete define a person. Better life is waiting for the people who moving forward with their dreams. Losing self-confident will lead a really negative result for everyone. Seldom of people want to help the man who living with bed attitude towards the society, because this kind of people are easy to give up. If a man cannot get success by his own ability and, very unluckily, nobody wants to help him, it is extremity hard for him to make his dream come true. Therefore, lost self-confident means lost most of opportunity to success. I hope that everyone can do something good for this world but not give up because of your temporary bad job or low income. In addition, every person is a very unique individual, so that everyone has their own way to get succeed. Also, everybody has their personal attitude towards success. We do not need to copy others’ road. So people should not feel down of their low payment or even lost confident. Many people feel not satisfied with their jobs. Some of them even graduate with a good degree. Actually most of the industry is facing “further overcapacity situation”. So a good job is hard to find. Maybe some people have strong ability but they cannot get a good chance. Maybe you hold a high degree but companies need the employees with hand-on background. Many reasons lead to people working unsatisfied. Some smart people will choose to survival first, employment later. You can temporary find a job which is not that good, and look for a better one. This kind of job is not wasting your time, but increase work experience and preparing for a better job. As Mike Rose pointed out, “there’s a moral and characterological aura to occupational autonomy, income, cleanliness, leading us to slip from qualities of the work to qualities of the worker.”(9) A temporary job can tell nothing of who you are. And actually we should not pay much attention on the type of work but how well that a person did on his job. Any kind of job can have a best worker. A person should not be only defines by his or her ability to make money. The reason why human being is called higher species is we have our own characteristic character. A person has many skills for living, intelligence, knowledge, moral character, connection and work… Work is only a part of a person, so it is not - at - all – scientific to define a person by their work and income. As Mike Rose said, “We need to keep in mind, though, that there are aspects of human mental activity that are not captured in the standard definitions of intelligence.”(11) People should be judged from many different aspects. Abraham Lincoln said, “Reputation is the shadow. Character is the tree.” Our character is much more than what we do that others can see. All in all, people have their own character and the ability to make money is just a little part of him or her. We should not judge a person by their work and how much they make. People should be defined by skills for living, intelligence, knowledge, moral character, connection and work…
