All students need to enroll themselves in the AEM 3230 Winter Online Blackboard web site to ensure they
receive important correspondence, have access to Quizzes and Practice Tests and other rich website features.
The web site has a copy of all announcements, documents, homework assignments, and FAQs. Please be sure
to check it frequently (i.e., at least several times during a week and immediately before class). Please let me
know if you have any problems accessing the site.
Lectures:
Online with each module. I have set this course up to be as clear and easy to follow as possible. Some students
still miss important class assets. Pay attention and go through each module systematically. Please note that
each module contains (pretty much) SEVEN (7) things. Be sure that you read/access each thing in each
module.
1. Brief video outlining what the topic is (about 5 minutes each).
2. Reading assignment: generally from the textbook
3. Lecture: me + the camera + powerpoints. Be sure to watch these. I ask you questions
that require emails responses!
4. Homework link (also do optional LEARNsmart flashcards & watch Guided Examples
and Interactive Presentations)
5. Sample problems: me + sample problems + pen. Very helpful to show you how to do the
problems.
6. Email the professor link.
7. Piazza for discussions: get on and read, ask & answer questions. You get points for this
and you get learning out of it, so do it.
Prerequisites:
AEM 2210 (Financial Accounting) or equivalent.

Objectives of the Course:
This course provides an introduction to accounting techniques used by internal company managers when they
are faced with planning, directing, controlling, and decision-making activities in their organizations.
Accounting information can be used to identify and analyze alternatives and to guide the manager to a course of
action that will yield the greatest benefit to the company. While the major emphasis in financial accounting is
on the accumulation and presentation of accounting data to external decision makers, the emphasis in
managerial accounting is on the presentation and analysis of that data by internal decision makers.
The objective of this Managerial Accounting course is to familiarize you with the requisite technical skills for
problem solving; for example, determining unit product costs, measuring production process costs, budgeting,
performance reporting, allocating resources efficiently within the firm, and maximizing profits while
maintaining the ability to meet long-term goals. As managers, you will need to identify the relevant
information, the appropriate method for analyzing that information, and the manner in which to communicate
your observations and recommendations to others in the organization.
Office Hours:
Professor Shackell will have regularly scheduled office hours (where she sits on piazza waiting for questions).
See the course calendar for the hours. She is also quite responsive to email. You should hear back within 24
hours.
Grading:
Students with documented disabilities will be accommodated as per Cornell policy. Please give your
documentation to me as soon as possible.
The following weights will be applied in determining the final grade:

Discussion participation:
This term we will be using Piazza for class discussion. The system is catered to getting you help quickly and
efficiently from classmates & from me. Rather than emailing questions, I encourage you to post your questions
on Piazza. You will be graded on your level of participation. Both asking and answering questions. If you
have any problems or feedback for the developers, email team@piazza.com.

Exams:
The final exam is open book. You will also need a pencil or pen and a non-graphing, non-financial, nonprogrammable (i.e., basic 5-function) calculator. You will need to be able to scan your exam and upload it to
blackboard at the appropriate time. Students who do not take the exam will receive a score of 0. Please note
that this has happened every semester recently. A student thinks “I’m not quite prepared. I will take the exam
later.” This is not an option. You MUST take the exam as scheduled unless you have documented emergency
situation or have worked out an alternative arrangement with me well prior to the exam. Please note that this
penalty (final score = 0) has happened each of the last three online terms. I take this very seriously.

The examination will test your knowledge of specific definitions and facts, your understanding of managerial
accounting theory, and your ability to solve analytical problems. The exam may include multiple choice, shortanswer, and/or problems with multiple parts where partial credit may be available. You will be responsible for
all material covered in videos, lectures and reading assignments including (but not limited to) the text and
lectures. In addition to reviewing that material, you may wish to use additional resources to prepare for exams
such as Connect, and especially “Learn Smart”. You may also try forming a study group with other students or
enlisting the aid of a tutor.
Academic Integrity:
Each student in this course is expected to abide by the Cornell University Code of Academic Integrity. Under
the provisions of the Code, anyone who gives or receives unauthorized assistance in the preparation of work at
home or during tests (whether on-line quizzes or final exams) will be subject to disciplinary action. Your name
on any piece of work is our assurance that you have neither given nor received any unauthorized help in its
preparation. You may assist each other on assignments by answering questions and explaining accounting
concepts. However, you should neither copy nor allow another student to copy your work directly.
All University policies with respect to cheating will be enforced. A student who is found to have cheated on an
exam will receive an “F” in the course.
