ALAMEDA SCHOOL
DISPATCH
The Junior Boys travelled to Weyburn on the 17th & 18th of October. Their first match
was against Yorkton and the boys won two straight. Their second match was against Sturgis
and after a tightly played match, the boys split their games. The boys also split matches
with Arcola and lost two straight to Weyburn. A record of 4 and 4 placed the boys in a
playoff against Arcola. The games were very close with Alameda eventually winning 2 games
to 1, to advance to the semi-finals against the winners of pool B. Yellow Grass won pool b
and 5 of their starters were in grade 10. The boys lost the first game to Yellow Grass but
rebounded to win the next two to advance to the finals against Weyburn. Weyburn Junior
High were the better team on this day and won the final in two straight. Both games
displayed a lot of skill and sportsmanship. Congratulations participants on your efforts.
District play-downs closed out the year in Junior Volleyball. The boys travelled to
Stoughton to compete in the AA category which pitted them against schools twice our size.
Our first match was against Rocanville and the boys won two straight. The Rocanville
team was very skilled and the games were very close. Our next match was against Carlyle,
the boys again won two straight. Radville was up next and the team again won two straight.
The Alameda Team finished first in their pool with a record of 6 & 0. The result was a
cross over match vs. the Giants from Redvers. The boys again rose to the occasion and
defeated the much bigger team, 2-0. This pitted us against the other crossover winner,
which ended up being Rocanville.
The final was very tight. Alameda won the first game after much back and forth action.
Rocanville got out to a quick start in the second game and held on to win and force a very
tense game 3. Rocanville held the early lead at 9-2, but the boys showed some great
resilience and battled back to tie the game at 9. After much battling, the Alameda team
gained a slight advantage and opened up a 3 point lead. This proved to be enough as the
boys held on to win their second district championship in a row.
The Alameda Dolphins Junior Girls Volleyball team (Grades 8/9) had a very
successful turn out at a tournament held in Carievale. The girls played a total of five
games throughout the day, showing improvement as the day went on. The Dolphins
were able to show mental strength in a couple of very tight, must win matches which
pushed them into the final against the Redvers Rams. The Dolphins again were able
to show mental toughness by limiting errors on their side of the court, and
supporting each other as a team, resulting in a very close first place victory over the
Rams. This was an important victory for the Dolphins as it showed them that staying
calm, and above all working together as a team will provide them with positive results
The Alameda Dolphins Junior Girls Volleyball Team finished off the 2014 season
at the District Volleyball Championships in Fillmore, on Thursday November 13. The
girls showed off their ability to play together as a well-rounded, team by swinging
well at the net, as well as demonstrating their strength on serve. The girls played
four games throughout the course of the day. The girls won a split match against
Maryfield, and defeated Gladmar in two sets during the round robin, placing them in
first place in their pool. The first playoff game the Dolphins were faced with, would
be against the Fillmore Falcons. The Dolphins played very well, and rolled over the
Falcons in two sets placing them in the Championship game. The Dolphins would once
again needed to face off against the Gladmar Falcons for the District title. The
Dolphins played well, but were unable to keep up the momentum in a close third set
game. Throughout the tournament the Dolphins battled hard, and were able to end
off their season in a very positive way. Congratulations on your season girls!

Mr. Cameron spoke about what Remembrance Day
means and how thankful we should all be. We then

silence.
The student’s artwork, poems and essays were on
display at the Alameda Legion following the service
on November 11th.

Gr.8/9
The grade 8/9’s have had a busy month. Both classes are finishing
up their units on Rational Numbers in Math. In Career Education
the students are working on short-term and long-term goal setting in
regards to work, volunteerism, and education. The students just
finished completing their health action plans to support others and
are now working through a unit on sustainability. In English
Language Arts, the students just finished writing research papers
and are now learning about First Nations and Greek narratives. In
Social Studies the students are learning about the land in different
regions of Canada. The students are completing a unit on Optics and
Vision in Science.
Action Plans
The grade 8/9 Health class has been busy carrying out a variety of
action plans that are designed to support others. Shaelyn held a Hat
Day and raised $35.50 for the Salvation Army. James collected
boxes of household items and donated them to a church in Estevan.
Rhandi created a presentation on the effects of bullying for the grades
6-9 classes. Paige hosted a hot chocolate sale at the school and
raised $82.20 for the Salvation Army. A group of 12 students (Liam,
Dylan, Tyren, Dahlyn, Morgan, Jessie, Zac, Cole, Mackenzie,
Brianna, Emily, and Austin) held a bake sale at the school and raised
$298.00 for the new school athletic jerseys. Nathan is currently
collecting goods to donate to the less fortunate. Bethany, Jett, Josie,
and Madison will be hosting a talent show on Nov. 26th and donating
the proceeds to breast cancer research. The students have all done
an excellent job of planning and carrying out these action plans.
The Rookie Girls wrapped up their season by attending the 1A
district competition in Carlyle on November 13th. The girls played
hard all day. They beat both Arcola and Manor but lost to both
Carlyle teams. They finished 3rd in the round robin and played
against Carlyle 1 in the semi-final. They fought hard to the end of
the game but came up short, placing them in 3rd over-all for the
competition. The girls had a good season and made many
improvements along the way. Our grade 7 girls will be a great
addition to the junior volleyball team next year!
Congratulations to the Alameda Rookie Boys for a great volleyball
season! With hard work and determination they improved
throughout the year. We played home and home matches against
Oxbow and Carnduff as well as a match in Alameda against Wawota.
The boys finished league play with a 10-14 win-loss record. They
went on to Rookie ‘A’ Playoffs in Maryfield on November 13. After a
long day of games against Bellegarde, Wawota, and Whitebear, they
finished by losing a long battle against Maryfield in the semi-final
which placed them 3rd overall in the tournament. A successful end
to a wonderful season! Good job boys!
We need your input to make a difference!
We are asking for your help in promoting our online survey for a cyberviolence project that is very important to the community.
This is a two year project made possible by Status of Women Canada. The goal of this project is to find solutions to the emerging
issue of cyberviolence in Southeast Saskatchewan. Envision is working with community partners to determine the severity of the
issue and the effectiveness of current solutions in the Southeast. With these partners, Envision will devise and implement a strategy
that, aligned with the provincial framework, makes the greatest impact in our communities while attempting to influence change in
overall beliefs about cyberviolence and digital citizenship. We will be focusing our data collection on youth grades 7-12, teachers,
parents, service providers and various community organizations through an online survey and focus groups. Data collection will be
completed by December 2014 and will help to find solutions to prevent cyberviolence. This project is currently funded to address
the needs of young women and girls experiencing online violence, however, it is our hope that in the future we can use the
information collected to make a difference for all those experiencing violence online. In addition, Envision is willing to set up
support computers at three way conferences in schools and during lunch periods to help expose our online survey and project.
If you would like to participate in our online survey please go to the following link: www.surveymonkey.com/s/cyberviolence
