She is a specialist in Health Care Economics with a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. Prior to coming to UCSD, she was a faculty member in the Department of Economics at the University of Texas and a Research Economist for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. She is the author of numerous publications.) 9.30 to 10.50 Dr. Ranjeeta Basu Topic: “Micro-Lending – A Solution to World Poverty: Myth or Reality?” ROOM: P - 30 (Dr. Basu has a B.A. from St. Xavier College in Bombay India and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside. She has been department chair of the Economics Department at California State University – San Marcos where she teaches Economic Development. He is working on his Ph D at Alliant University. He is certified as a government financial manager and is a budget analyst for the US Veterans Affairs. She has a Ph D in Political Science from USC. She is the author of several books and articles. Her main areas of specialty include the Presidency, Women and Politics, the Media and Politics, and Political Leadership.) 12.30 to 1.50 Campaign ’08: A GOP – Democratic Debate Room: SSC – 1 (Governing Board Room) (The Republican Debater will be Larry Greenfield. Mr. Greenfield has a B.A. in Political Science from Berkeley and a Law Degree from Georgetown. He is California Director of the Republican Jewish Coalition where he works to promote interfaith relations. He was statewide Co-Chairman of the re-election of Governor Schwarzenegger and has been an advisor to the Governor’s Legal Office. The Democratic debater will be Bob Hamilton. Bob Hamilton is the Democratic Party candidate for California’s 49 th House District. He is also head of the Fallbrook Democratic Club. He was commissioned as an officer in the Naval Reserve and served as an anti-submarine officer and nuclear weapons officer during the Vietnam conflict.) 2.00 to 3.20 Dr. Lisa Shaffer (Climate Change Project of Al Gore) Topic: An Inconvenient Truth Talk is Given in Conjunction with the Campus Explorations Program Room: P-32 (Dr. Shaffer is Executive Director of the UCSD Environment and Sustainability Initiative at Scripps. She is also adjunct professor of International Relations and Pacific Studies. She has a Ph D in Political Science and Public Policy from George Washington University. She has been personally trained by former Vice President Al Gore to make this presentation – based on his award-winning documentary.) She has her Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Santa Barbara. The Truth about Domestic Violence, the Feminist Movement, and Women in the Workplace Room: P – 18 (Mara Allard is a practicing attorney. She is a former District Attorney in San Diego County. Charity, Activism, and Social Justice ROOM: Governing Board Room (SSC – 1) (Dillon Emerick is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Palomar College. He is presently finishing his Ph.D. dissertation at the University of California, Riverside. His main interests are Critical Theory, Applied Ethics, and Critical Thinking. Dr. Kathy Grove is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Palomar College. She has her Ph.D. in Sociology and is the author of a book “Building Bridges” as well as several articles on women and HIV/AIDS. She has been nominated for the Distinguished Research Award and the Distinguished Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching at Palomar.) 11.00 to 12.20 Farideh Rahmani Topic: The Relations Between Iran and the United States Since World War II and the Effects of Sanctions on Iran Room: P – 30 (Farideh Rahmani is Adjunct Professor of Economics at Palomar College. She was a full time faculty member at Ferdowsi University of Mashad, Iran. She has her Bachelors’ degree from the London School of Economics and her Masters Degree from Ferdowsi University. (Example: How Do the Padres Determine the Prices of Season Tickets?) Room: P – 30 (Jacob LaRiviere is an Economics Ph D candidate at UCSD. He is also a Lecturer at UCSD and at CSU – San Marcos. He has presented his research at conferences in Sweden, Denmark, and in California. ) 2.00 to 3.20 Dr. Yoram Bauman Topic: Comedy, Economics, and Climate Change Room: SSC – 1 (Governing Board Room) (Dr. Yoram Bauman is the world’s first and only stand-up economist! His economics jokes have received over 450,000 hits on YouTube. He received his Ph D in Economics from the University of Washington. He is an Environmental Economist and has produced studies of the impacts of climate change and also has an online Economics textbook.) 4
